Sounds like Steve forgot he used his retention on Vrana earlier and wasn't getting anything to trade JVR at full price. Just a guess.

Philly could have retent that 50% salary (they have slots open) and Yzerman just being the 3rd team to get a player from Detroit to PHI they want. And then get some assets for us from the destination who really will want JvR.

Yeah, but the thing above said it sounded like Yzerman wanted to flip him for picks. Philly could just flip him for picks if they were willing to retain salary.

Probably something like Zadina for JVR and then JVR for a 2nd and 3rd or something to another team.

Why would the Wings want to do that? Why would the Flyers want to do that? Why would anyone involved have that arrangement set up?

Sell low on Zadina to get a different asset that fewer people would be interested in? The ask for JVR was rumored to be a 3rd round pick and he didn’t end up being traded. You would have given Zadina up to get the same return as Sundqvist.

That’s bad business

I think when we eventually win our next Cup we're gonna look back at not getting JVR as one of the major contributions
JVR on deadline day:

The Bonino trade that just happened is one. Go look at cap friendly trades. Patrick Kane trade as well.
Again, I'm not talking about a team helping broker the deal.

Someone speculated that the JVR trade didn't go down because the Wings couldn't "retain" salary on him.

Yeah, so theoretically if we had another slot left (we used all 3 for this season), Steve would have taken JVR for whatever the return to Philly was, then retained 50% and flipped him somewhere else for picks. Same thing Ari did in the Kane deal or Mtl in the Bonino deal. Only speculation that is what ended the deal, who really knows what it was.
