Sounds like Steve forgot he used his retention on Vrana earlier and wasn't getting anything to trade JVR at full price. Just a guess.
Philly could have retent that 50% salary (they have slots open) and Yzerman just being the 3rd team to get a player from Detroit to PHI they want. And then get some assets for us from the destination who really will want JvR.
There ya go... would love to know the story
I was just having a similar thoughtProbably something like Zadina for JVR and then JVR for a 2nd and 3rd or something to another team.
Wings can't retain anymore salaryYeah, but the thing above said it sounded like Yzerman wanted to flip him for picks. Philly could just flip him for picks if they were willing to retain salary.
Wings can't retain anymore salary
How do you "retain" salary on a player who you've never had?

For instance? I'm not talking about taking on salary as a 3rd party.Happens all the time and a whole bunch the past few days.
JVR on deadline day:I think when we eventually win our next Cup we're gonna look back at not getting JVR as one of the major contributions

Again, I'm not talking about a team helping broker the deal. The Bonino trade that just happened is one. Go look at cap friendly trades. Patrick Kane trade as well.

Someone speculated that the JVR trade didn't go down because the Wings couldn't "retain" salary on him.
