wait till they get there hands on him after practice on Tuesday

The media will be ripping him left and right

Players have no respect for the media. That is the way it has always been in pro sports. Only the ex-players in the media have any idea what is going on. The rest are just frustrated wannabes.

Team should and will protect him.

Honestly, if an adult media person wants to get in a 19 year-olds face after what is probably a pretty tough experience, somebody should ban them from the dressing room for the rest of the season.

Here's hoping the Canucks can try and broker a trade to a team that is used to developping complete players, like London.

This will all blow over in two weeks and the nay Sayers will be on to something else. Was Virtanen completely healthy? I know he got sent down to the comets and got minimal ice time in those two games before being loaned to team Canada.

If he wasn't healthy makes no sense to loan him.

Well, it worked at the U18s for Canada where an unhealthy Virtanen dominated helping Canada win gold.

At the end of the day, Virtanen didn't look fast which was either conditioning or health because normally the guy has the speed to give NHL defenseman problems.

Shinkaruk was also willing to play through injury to be part of the team, and opted for surgery only after being cut. It's certainly possible that Jake wasn't 100%, but one can only speculate...

Thats the problem with Virtanens game, he 6'1 205. Not 6'4 230. If hes going 0-100 every game hes going to burn his body out.

He did just have a hip pointer injury. Though that sounds like an excuse.

Don't think an injury affected Virtanen at WJC. If you look at his role on the Canucks prior to WJC, he was being used as a depth guy tasked with being reliable defensively, being physical, and chipping in some offense here and there. And then he heads to WJC and its a huge change in role - he jumps right into the top 6 and PP1 and is expected to be a leader of the team offensively. If I had to guess, the reason he struggled at the WJC was the massive change in role without a lot of time to adapt. Jake isn't a cerebral or high hockey IQ guy, so perhaps it takes him longer than other players to adapt to his surroundings. With that said, it's troubling that is offensive game appeared so rusty... which is why I'd argue he should be heading down to Calgary so he can get a lot of offensive minutes in a top 6 and PP1 role.

LOL....would you rather have had Virtanen play one preliminary round game and then get blindsided with a concussion?....just announced that Nylander is done at the WJC and probably for awhile in the AHL...and Ehlers just scored his first goal in 29 games into an empty net last night in San Jose.

No, I would rather have Nylander. Period. The one who projects to be a superstar over the balance of his career instead of the grinder.

I don't much care what happens in these Juniors, but Concussions & injury can happen to anyone at anytime. You forget we drafted Virtanen out of surgery, right?

Year and a half later an Ehlers and Nylander are still being brought up. Is there a redo? No. Jake is a Canuck and we might as well support the guy while he's still here instead of constantly following prospects who will never be Canooks.

i think a canuck fan can say 'i'd rather have drafted ehlers/nylander' and yet still advocate a positive outcome for virtanen, it's not an either/or situation

it's the same with horvat/nichuskin...as a hockey fan i'd like to see both develop into solid top 6 forwards, not one fail at the expense of another

What benefit do the Canucks have of loaning an injured Virtanen?

Well ya i'd love for Virtanen to be a 40 goal NHLer...

An adult media person? 19-year old?

When did 19 not mean being an adult.

I remember when the majority of the fanbase got their backs up over this Tony G headline. Not so defensive for a player in his first year out of junior, it seems.

Yeah... I don't think most are trying to wage a war on Virtanen or any of the other picks. They're waging one on management and in this case, Jake is inconveniently in the way because of how his development's been mismanaged thus far.

What are you talking about? This thread is 19 pages of people being uber-defensive because they misunderstood what the word "goat" means.

He doesn't mean the "Greatest of all time" goat......

yeah, if you were to fire Lindenning, I would quit my griping with Jake immediately. I'm not the kind of guy to gripe over spilled milk provided the source of the mess has been rectified. But when Farmer Benning is making himself a new mess every time he does his thing with the cows...

Cannot unread this.

Seconded.

It's been said before: It's not Virtanen's fault that Benning passed up Ehlers/Nylander for him, it's Bennings fault.

Virtanen is simply the example used when pointing out that not only is Benning bad at contracts, negotiations and trades, he equally bad at scouting, seeing as he botched the most important draft pick this franchise has had in over a decade.

Which is funny in a way, because "he may suck at all other aspects of being a GM, but he's a good scout" was the final stand argument for many Benning apologists even when there was no logical way to defend him.

Sorry, but Benning is just an overall terrible executive. He has no business being employed in the NHL in any capacity and lucked out by being an ex-player who got into the "old boys club."
