Player Discussion Jake Sanderson (D) PART 3

In my opinion I don't see Sanderson ever winning a Norris Trophy.
He has a lot of incredible point getting defensemen ahead of him and he will be in competition with them for many more seasons. I have no doubt that at some point he will be considered for a Norris Trophy, but winning one will be tough.

Unless he gets an outlier win like Doughty did in 2016 when he got 51 points. That year Karlsson had 82 points.....clearly the voters did not want to see our Erik win the trophy two seasons in a row....what a ripoff. Even if Sanderson is one of the 3 finalists in the future for a Norris Trophy he may not win because of voter politics.

This year Jake is tied for 12th in defensemen scoring with 42 points.
Makar with 75 points
Werenski with 68 points
Hughes with 60 points in 50 games

One, winning a Cup will propel him into the conversation and get the voters to really notice him.

Two, those points will go up once this team starts scoring 5 on 5.

So, since 1 Jan, he's been 8th in scoring among D with 21 pts in 25 games, that's a 69 pts pace (noice!) on one of the lower scoring teams in the league, I think the offensive talent is there to win a Norris, he's clearly got the defensive game, but it will definitely be a bit of a long shot.

To add to this, on the PP during this timeframe he’s on par with the best. 11 pts is tied for second with a few guys.

It’s his 5v5 production that lags behind quite a bit. But that might also be just as much of a team issue given our overall struggles there so it’ll be interesting to see what he can do once our team is better at even strength. We might find out soon if the trades work out.

But Sanderson himself said earlier this season he doesn’t think he will ever win a Norris. Don’t see him being a perennial nominee but one season, you never know.

For some reason, I’m enjoying watching Sanderson more than Karlsson considering his defensive game. Felt like Karlsson was more dependent on having Methot next to him than Sanderson is dependent on Zub.
When Zub was out and Sandy was playing with Hamonic, he was very disappointing to watch. Sanderson is a gem, but he can't carry plugs on his line to the extent that EK has been able to.

Here's to hoping Sanderson never has to play with Hamonic again. Zub helps bring out the best in him and I'm so happy that he's healthy

I'd argue top 5 of all time at his absolute best. Very few players could control and take over a game like prime Karlsson, the guy massively tilted the ice every shift.

To me he's kind of like a Orr/Lindros/Forsberg type of player where as dominant as he was, unlucky injuries prevented him from really showing what he was truly capable of.
The top 5 Defencemen of all time would have to consider the following players and the different eras of the game:

It's too early to make that type of claim; not to mention ludicrous!

The selection of Doughty over Karlsson was a travesty; clearly the voters were on something circulated by Dregger!

Last season I wanted to see Sanderson play RD with Chychrun at LD. That would have been a great pair to try out.

When we had both Chabot and Karlsson, I wanted to see Chabot and Karlsson together to test that too.

I think both of those pairings could have been totally dominant offensively with a first line. Alas . . .

Doughty got his cuz he was due. Steve Simmons ran a shameless campaign on his behalf, the others in Toronto media was on the bandwagon.

Sanderson will get his because he is turning into a 2-way beast. You can make a valid argument with regards to which of the 3 superstars in our roster (Tkachuk, Stutzle, Sanderson) is more valuable to this team. And each candidate will have their own plus points, which is why Ottawa is lucky with the sum of all parts that paints a picture of a contender in the making.

His 5 on 5 scoring seems to have really taken off.

What a snipe last night. His shot has improved dramatically since his arrival. It's now a bit of a weapon and you can see his confidence rising with it.

Just a treat to watch. An elite talent who is a pro's pro and seems to be driven to be the best. I won't be putting a ceiling on him yet.

Karlsson was never THE shut down guy though. You needed to pair him with someone that took care of D while he was all over the place. Sanderson is out there trying to stop the other teams best from scoring so it's not fair to suggest he can't carry plugs when he does everything humanly possible to get possession back and has to rely on a guy that's a fringe NHLer to help out.

Nobody can be a one man shut down guy, you still need a competent partner and team system to support you. Karlsson never had that responsibility, he was the guy you needed to back up.

Gotta disagree there, it feels like a huge mischaracterization of how EK was used. EK was a beast at stripping pucks off opponents. He wasn't rn most physical guy, but he used his positioning and stick checking to play elite D at his peak while someone like Meth complimented him. His skating let him separate himself from opponents similar to McDavid, MacKinnon, and very few players could even do that.

EK, Sandy, heck even Makar can't carry plugs but the difference between someone like EK and Sandy is possessing something like his insane acceleration to separate himself from opponents and get into positions where he can use his other skills to dominate.

Sandy also needs a competent partner too. He was horrid with Hammer the way prime Bobby Orr or Lidstrom would suffer without a competent D partner.

Probably our overall best player this season.

Not probably. It's a given at this point. Stutzle and Tkachuk round out the top-3

Yeah it's a given.

Shortly after the draft I said if this team is in the best situation moving forward, Sanderson will be our MVP from those selected.

It seems that is what is transpiring. The scary thing is, it looks like he can fill out more, and hone his skills more. We are going to see an even scarier Sanderson as the years go by.

Insane he's only 22 playing like this. Making me think of Lidstrom.

It would have been a Norris type season if not for that 2/3 month spell with Hamonic on his pairing and the same deployment.

Crazy thing is he’s top 15 of D in the league in Point Shares with 11.9, but is still behind Chabot who is sitting at 12.0.

The Sens top 2 D have been phenomenal for the Sens over the entire season, with valleys for both at times. If both are going at the same time they are a wagon.

Chabot plays better with Hamonic because Chabot is paired with the 1st or 2nd line in an offensive situation, usually vs mid or checking lines. Sanderson is always matched up vs the opponents best line, a situation where Hamonic always gets badly exposed.
For most of the year, Sanderson was on the ice for very few even strength goals for, as he was always paired with checkers (Norris or Pinto lines) facing the opponent's top line. And we know how little Norris scored 5 on 5.
The odd time Sanderson plays with Jensen, he also has looked good.
If we have an injury to Zub we need to play Sanderson on the right side with Kleven. That would be a better shutdown pair than Sanderson Hamonic which must never happen again. Sanderson played well for the US on the right side, he's our only d-man that can play his off side.
