Jake Muzzin scary injury

Honestly, not even sure it was the fall into the knee. Muzzin looked awkward after the initial cross check.

That seemed like a pretty solid stick to the lower back. Anyone with a history of herniated discs are easier to have them happen again.

When it looked like Muzzin tried to get up on his own do you think he made it even worse for himself?

Let me consult with my many years of medical training ...

... No clue. But I don't think it would. It's not like he skated off, then collapsed. It was probably just precautionary that they made him lie back down.

I still remember when Kevin Colley (Islanders at the time) suffered a broken neck and he was allowed to get up and skate himself off the ice. That was nuts.

Hopefully it's nothing too bad. From the way he reacted afterwards he probably felt some tingling in his extremities and the trainer told him to stay down.

Innocent play with an unfortunate result.

But I think it was mostly just precautionary, as he had movement in his limbs and was awake/alert. I'd guess something just wasn't quite 100% how it should feel so they played it safe rather then have something worse result.
Cross-checking someone in the numbers pretty much as hard as you can cross-check someone isn't exactly "innocent" tf

Horrible situation. Hope he’s okay and will be able to play for Toronto in the next round or at least at some point during the postseason.

Those calling for PLD to be suspended/had malicious intent need to take off their blinders.

He could still play in this series, no one really knows.

It’s not like the DPOS hasn’t judged a hit by the impact on the other player before.

He went to the hospital = He left the bubble.

That means he'll have to isolate for 4 days upon return to the bubble.

Hope Muzzin is OK. Didn't look good at all, looked like a concussion or neck injury, but finger crossed they were just being cautions.

As for the play itself, it was a pretty hard crosscheck, and crosschecking is supposed to be illegal. But in practice, refs never seem to call it, unless it's a crosscheck to the head. You can massively crosscheck a guy, taking him out of the play/injuring him, but as long as it's not to the head, there's almost always no call, while impeding a guy with the slightest hook gets called frequently. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in the NHL, I agree strongly with this article: In light of Jake Muzzin injury, why do NHL refs refuse to call crosschecking? - TheHockeyNews

But what PLD did is very common and essentially legal in practice (refs never call it), even though it's clearly illegal in the rulebook.

how often do players come back to play a few days after being stretchered off the ice

It's probably pretty uncommon, and I wouldn't bet on it, but I also wouldn't be completely surprised. There are situations where you just get hit in the right spot, and it feels awful or you feel numb in a spot, but it goes away in a short period of time. Not out of the realm of possibility that this was that kind of thing, just in a really worrisome location.

It’s been covered all over the place.

"Covered all over the place" ... and yet this "possibly not 4 days" stuff stems solely from Chris Johnston.

Logic tells me CJ got it wrong. Well logic and this:

Key questions, answers on protocols in Phases 3, 4 of Return to Play Plan

Can a player leave the secure zone and return?

"A player can leave if he receives permission for medical reasons or there are extenuating circumstances such as the birth of a child, illness or death in their family, or a family event, such as a wedding. When the player returns, he will be required to quarantine in his hotel room until he has received at least four consecutive negative test results over a four-day period."

I can't see them making an exception from their concussion protocol despite what CJ thinks he may have heard.
