But that doesn't translate to the same kind of salary for two different kind of players.

Defensive players usually don't get anywhere near the same kind of money as offensive players of similar talent.

Evans is a 3C that is great on the dot, defensively and on the PK that can contribute a bit offensively.

Monahan is a 2C that produces offensively and on the PP while being good on the dot and decent defensively.

There's also the injury angle to consider with Monahan, which caused him to re-sign with Montreal because he got injured before TDL in 2022-2023.

Evans is the kind of player teams love to add to their bottom 6 and doesn't have a big injury history. Does he get a 1st? Not necessarily, but we have seen similar player get it in the past.
The Lars Eller trade will be the benchmark every team will look to as a price.

3rd and a 5th for ellers does not bode too great for evans fetching a 1st.

I think if not and his ask on a new deal isn't something crazy you just bring him back. Young enough to age with the core and give guys like Beck and Kapanen some breathing room to take on larger roles. He's been great this season and has improved on a yearly basis

I don't think Montreal should accept anything less than a non-conditionnal 1st. He's also probably not worth a non-conditionnal 1st in isolation.

Eller was not traded at TDL so it's a pretty irrelevant comparable. He's also older so likelier to be a pure rental while Evans is only 28.

For the OP, I think he's actually rewards a 1st rd pick and even there, I think the Habs must extend him. They should specificly target a worthy prospect for 2nd center or RD. If not, Evans is a keeper for the succefull years.... and no, he will not be July 1st material for sure. Guys like Nadeau, Kulich, Savoie, Ritchie is probably too much to ask, but I think thats the Habs need to find

NHL gms will not be saying it is an "irrelevant comparable" lol.

Each and every one of them will point to it as the benchmark price for a quality bottom 6 C.

He will be the first name thrown out in every negotiation.

Only if GMs are completely ignoring context like you are.

No one was calling to acquire Eller in November, so there was no competition and no price inflation.

Are you saying price don't go up at TDL?

A non-conditional 1st rounder for Evans? You've all lost your collective freaking minds.
Again, I don't think he's worth that.

It's just that, personnally, I wouldn't trade him (unless he's asking for something like 5X5, in which case, yeah he can leave).

The Lars Eller trade will be the benchmark every team will look to as a price.

So that means Evans contract value is 2,5MX2.

If you could simply acquire players for cheaper and get more of them by doing it earlier teams would do it on every single rental.

Tell you what.

3rd for evans today. No competition, no price inflation. Problem solved. Nice and easy

And I can already predict the response "MTL would wait till the deadline for the highest price, and you'd have to pay that price now to get him earlier".

Except Evans is better than Eller. And younger so you can get him extended.
When we start chalking extensions onto rentals reality goes out the window.

There are a load of bottom 6 Cs available in this coming UFA season with the cream of the crop being Nic Dowd

Except it doesn’t
There are a boatload of bottom 6 Cs available in UFA this offseason.

Letting market value contracts that do not exist in reality impact your trade value would be quite foolish. All of these UFAs will be signed to market value deals, unless there is some indication that Jake Evans agent is significantly worse at his job than all of the other agents??

You are buying 1 year of Evans. And WSH bought 1 year of Eller.

Evans would get less today if Montreal had to trade him now, yes. However, Montreal doesn't have to do that and can start a bidding war between teams nearer to TDL.

Starting a bidding war is harder if only one or two teams are currently looking to add. The closer to TDL, the more teams start wanting to make moves.

This is basic logic that shouldn't be hard to get.

The Eller trade was a knee jerk reaction to Pittsburgh season's start to try to shake things. They probably talked to Washington only and made a deal quickly to get Eller back with the boys.

Hughes has months to find the best deal for Evans. The situations are not comparable.

So Pittsburgh's entire organization apparently missed that class on basic logic where they could have gotten massively more by waiting?

Disagreed.
Adding pretend years onto rentals is something fans of sellers do to tell themselves their rentals aren't rentals.

If it was the other way and someone tried to sell MTL a player who was 1 year away from UFA by chalking an extension, you would laugh in their face rightfully
