Realistically, he should be making $3.5-4 million per for what he actually brings to the table.

i dunno, i think his contract is fair for when it was signed. you're not getting a top six winger in ufa for 3.5-4m unless you get lucky and uncover an underappreciated player

the real problem is after boeser the canucks wingers are all not really ideal top 6 wingers. garland produces but has problems when playing with other good players. joshua is kind of limited offensively. sherwood, heinen and suter are all depth guys. if they had another top 6 winger to push debrusk down the lineup a bit he'd look a lot better imo

You're ideally hoping Lekkermaki fills that role as he's on an ELC. But he doesn't look quite ready for that yet.

in the debrusk role, what this team really needed was a latter day mikael samuelsson. a middle six winger with the hands to plug in and play a complementary role on a top line if needed but undervalued and getting paid like a middle sixer.

debrusk is that too, other than the money part. he’s probably at 1.5x the cost of the guy we ideally would want, although i don’t know that there was a sammy available this summer.

Maybe Sherwood is that guy then? He surprised me with his shot, and he can actually make plays, he is much more skilled than I gave him credit for. He is paid like a bottom 6 guy but you can plug him onto any line and he would perform well in any role, at least he has so far anyways.

there were like 3-4 plays last night where his lack of offensive polish really showed and resulted in a blown chance. i like the player a lot but you're missing opportunities when you play him in the top six over a player with a more refined game

debrusk has been fine for us.

he had 4 points in the first 5 games of the season. Followed by a 4 game game point drought, just around the time Petey started to struggle, (Petey is the main driver of that line, no doubt).

After that, Debrusk had 7 points in 8 game. this is also the same time Pettersson is starting to play much better, but now he has 0 points in his last 2 games, but prior to that 7 points 8 games, so I think hes fine, there are some extended droughts, but once he learns Tocchets system, I think he will be more consistent for us.

DeBrusk hasn't started great. But with the cap going up, having a good all around second line winger for 5.5 million is going to look like a serious bargain soon. He's also a bit of a feast or famine guy who tends to thrive in tighter checking playoff style games. Let's not act like his story has been written after 18 games for a team still finding it's identity this year and struggling with injuries.

I think what we needed was an elite winger to play with Petey. Failing that a legit top 6 winger who has at least a few prime years left. I think Debrusk is a legit top 6 winger so I think he’s a better fit than a modern day Samuelsson (who was 32 turning 33 the same year when we signed him). But ya I get your point and right now we have Sherwood vastly outperforming his contract.
