So next year, it will be Allen/Primeau unless Primeau busts. Monty to the AHL (or traded) with Dichow. Dobes comes in 2024-2025.
I think Dobes' upcoming season will be his last one in the NCAA and will join Laval next year. Allen and Primeau with the Habs.

Possible, in which case Montembeault is likely traded unless we somehow don't sign Dichow or start one of Dobes/Dichow in the ECHL.

He routinely let's in horrible goals that have no right going in. It'll be hard for the team to play well when they know that any tiny mistake they make will result in a goal.

You're right that it's backup money, but the team would still need a starter. Maybe next summer they'll sign someone. Or maybe they'll still think Primeau is the future despite him never looking like an NHL player.

I just want a goalie in nets that I'm not worried will cost the team a game every time he plays.

I know we were spoiled with Price but this is the total opposite.
Montembeault and Allen are Tank commanders for next season, what more can we ask for since we’re trying to get a top 3 pick🙏. After that we’re only stuck with Allen for 2 years, he’s a great backup goalie and his salary reflects that.

Another sign that the team doesnt plan on being competive and going for the playoffs for the next 3 years

Allen is a solid goalie.
I don’t like this.
He helps push us further from Bedard.
Forget Bedard……we don’t have deer in the headlights Ducharme manning the ship towards the rocky shoals.

Think of a 4-5-6 pick…..so start dreaming of either Yager, Carlsson or Michkov.

No, it's not. Allen has a career .911 save percentage. Even last year with a record num ber of slot shots against it was .905

That is not a goalie who "routinely" lets in horrible goals. He is not a top starter but he is able and willing to carry a 48 game load. It gives us time to develop a 1B to play 34 games competently, whether it be Monty, Primeau or Dobes or anyone else in our system ..... or someone young we acquire.

I don't think Kent was planning to sign an expensive number 1 in the next two years, and if in year 3 we are contending and have found a good number one, then Allen is a great backup so your team does not fall apart if the starter gets hurt.

I like Allen so this is fine. I was worried when I heard extension they were going to do something dumb like 5x5. This gives us a "starter" in net for our rebuild.

I like the term. The AAV I'm less confident about, but with the term so short and no other goalie in the picture at the moment it seems like a smart move. Buys the Habs a few seasons to tank.

Well there goes my hopes that the team would get a good goalie to help the rebuild at some point.
Not sure if sarcastic but he’s a good goalie

I agree if you’re talking about Monty. Every single goalie including price gives up bad goals and I wouldn’t say Allen gives up more on average

"At some point"? Did you think it was going to happen this year or next?
I’m not sure why Allen gets so much hate. He was pretty good in STL and he’s been good for the habs as well. He’s actually a good goalie

Another sign that the team doesnt plan on being competive and going for the playoffs for the next 3 years
What goalie is out that that would make you think otherwise?

He is a solid goalie. But he isn't good enough to steal you games.
He’s stolen games lol he’s just not Carey Price. We are just a spoiled fan base that’s all

Allen has close to elite stats for a backup goalie limited to 35GP - his drop comes when that threshold is exceeded

Montembeault & Primeau need to provide some quality starts in the remaining 47GP

Good! We need him with Carey down, he's good enough to not make it embarrassing.

I remember the meltdown here when we traded for him, fun times.

I didn't expect Allen to cost that much.

Oh well. At least he's decent.
Comparable cap hit (not counting RFA deals):
Jonathan Bernier 4.1M
Petr Mrazek 3.8M
Cam Talbot 3.667M
Chris Driedger 3.5M
Anton Khudobin 3.333M

I'd say it's pretty much on par if not slightly discounted when you consider cap% of when the deal is signed.

A bit mixed feelings on this....

With the number of win-now contenders with shaky goalie situations, kinda wish they had kept this in the back burner until the spring. If he's having a solid season, as a ufa on a sub-3M expiring deal, a first from a playoff team needing to bolster the goalie situation heading into the post season stretch was a possibility.

If not, you extend him in February and maybe pay a bit more for the delay.

They must really value his locker room precense and fit with the coaching staff to have prioritized the extension this early... 3-5M gets you a similar 1B goalie most offseasons.

Not opposed, but imo how this signing plays out will be a good litmus test of the quality of their player & culture evaluation. Hope he does provide the intended veteran stability and solid/stable performance through the next 3 yrs that this decision banks on
