Jagr: "I never stretch"

Haha! I've always knew that. Stretching kills elasticity. You know like an old and overused bow. Less stretching, fresher body :sarcasm:

Jagr is da man!

I didn't read the article but static stretching before activity can be bad for you and you will not preform as well and will increase your chance of injury. You should do dynamic stretching before activity and then static stretching after for the best results. For professional athletes their bodies are used to the same strenuous activities over and over so stretching afterwards won't have as much impact.

hehehe

I got turned on a bit ;O

Terry Pendleton played for many years without stretching. He almost never got injured. After his trade to Atlanta, he was told to start stretching. He wound up getting injured while in Atlanta.

This is called anecdotal evidence and it is meaningless.

i've always advocated (in gym) skipping the traditional "stretches" and instead just doing more focused and serious "warm up sets"

eg. when ramping up for a 350lb 3x5 back squat, do 45lb x 5, 135lb x 5, 185lb x 5, 225lb x 5, 285lb x3, then the work set

30 years playing goal, 20 years of running marathons and 7 years competing in Iron Man events......never once stretched.

Always seemed like a huge waste of time.

I've never read anything concrete on the benefits either, well except for all the yoga junkies out there.

I never stretch neither.I'm not flexible at all and it's just painful for nothing.I don't see the point for me at least.I just jog a bit or whatever and I'm fine.

Wow that's interesting. How come the one time I didnt warm up and went to practice soccer I got the first groin strain I ever had?

A light jog already increases the blood flow in the leg muscles much more than what you would get with an hour of leg massage. That increased blood flow cuts the acidity levels down in the muscle while bringing in oxygen and creates warmth. These are all important things that need to happen before strenuous activity, which also are key in injury prevention.

I think the main issue is that stretching is just not very well understood, especially seeing how the scientists themselves can't get to a common agreement about the effects of it. Every time when doing a stretch there should be some kind of an answer to "Why do I actually want to lengthen this muscle?"

The mental side of preparing for sports can't be ignored either. Routines are one way to handle the anxiety of impending muscle stress, and someone's way of preparing for it might be to do 30 minutes of stretches. We can argue about what the exact physical effects of that are, but how about the effects of a calmer state of mind resulting from doing all that preparatory work? I'd say a distracted state of mind from missing the usual routines before pushing the body to its limits is a great injury risk in itself. The psychological part shouldn't be underestimated in any sports, though from a purely sciency point of view it's unquantifiable, hocus pocus stuff.

I can play for 10 more years.

.... I am not sure at what level

He gets a fair amount here... but not nearly enough love for this guy. Maybe thats what going back to Russia gets you. But for people fawning over Teemu (not without reason), not enough said for a guy at 43 still playing like he is. Especially given the entertainment he provides :D

Stretching probably isn't that important for you because you seem quite active.

If you're a weekend warrior that doesn't do much else, stretching is more important. Especially if you used to be fitter and you still think you can do what you did before.

Jagr, during his time as a Penguin was a guy that messed with reporters constantly with his "deadpan serious interviews" that were never serious when you really knew what Jags was about.

Funny how people take his word as gospel. He's literally screwing with people and having a laugh.

And also, warming up is the most important part, stretching is also great of course, but the increased blood flow and getting your heart rate up is going to be the most important part.

Because of your cardio, your blood flow and heart rate were where it needed to be to not worry about that.

I mean, lactic acid build up is probably going to trick people into thinking "Oh crap, I need to stretch!" or just regular pain from working out which is basically your body saying "You did well today, go sleep and let it heal, if you don't you're gonna hurt."

As a Euro whose favorite physical activity is soccer, I can't imagine playing without stretching at least a little bit and, more importantly, not warmed up. Then again, I'm not flexible by any means.
But I can barely see any benefit of a stretching routine before a hockey practice, yeah.

Jagr is a freak, let him train whatever way he feels like.

Stretching during the warmup? Who the heck does that anymore? I thought it was common knowledge you stretch after you're done, but not before. I was taught this in 1995. Has time stood still?

The only reason for stretching during warmups is to make it look like you're doing something, but you're really just lazy.
