Player Discussion Jackson Blake

The path forward with these guys definitely will depend on what comes available. I'm not keen on moving any of them, but if they can be used to acquire a stud dman or center, you have to think long and hard. Obviously, the ideal scenario is that we manage to acquire those pieces in free agency or with the many other nice trade assets we have and have one of those teams that's stacked top to bottom. That's not even a fantasy if a few things break our way this offseason and/or by next trade deadline.

Not sold on his long-term future with the club. This is actually a compliment to him and how well he's played. They're going to have to give to get a star player. Kaprizov, for example, is not getting traded here for futures alone. Blake is increasingly compelling a piece to acquire something meaningful.

Yeah, of course he is available for guys like Kaprizov. I find it hard to believe Kaprizov becomes available, and if he does, he is willing to go to Carolina. I fully expect if he is available, he has a destination in mind just like the breadman, Rantanen, etc.

Otherwise, I fully expect Blake to be here unless we can't afford him.

I don't think there's much doubt they'd move a guy like Blake for Kaprizov. We'll see who comes available. I don't think Kaprizov necessarily will. Even if he does, I'm not sure I see him as a guy that would commit here long term. If he doesn't stick with the Wild, I bet he's got a couple of destinations in mind. Given that Blake isn't a Necas in terms of fit, I don't think they'd necessarily take the risk they took with Rantanen without that long term commitment.

Kaprizov is just the next superstar nearing a decision on his long-term future.

Their behavior, successful and unsuccessful, indicates that they they're not going to stop trying, for whoever that may be. Hence, my skepticism.

Kaprizov is a UFA in a year, I don't think we're going to consider risking a repeat of Rantanen fiasco with him and I don't see Kaprizov agreeing to sign a deal in any trade rather than just hitting free agency. Kap, if MIN can't keep him, is absolutely my top target for us in our continuous big game hunting efforts. He definitely qualifies as a player I would consider moving Blake for but I just think it's unlikely we see a trade for him. And obviously much better for us if we can just sign him as a UFA.

And anyways, league wide I'm not so sure Stank's value is less than Blake's , so Stank can be a main piece in a trade for a star player if one comes available too. I'm just not convinced one that makes sense for us comes available via trade in the next couple years. I think going big game hunting in the UFA market for the first time with the borg may be how we plan to approach it. Then we don't have to move any in that trade but will have to move somebody for cap allocation reasons eventually, but probably moved for picks/cheaper prospects to help us keep backfilling any cap-related departures, as we've done recently anyways.

I see Blake being here long term, but yeah like I said in my other post I would consider moving him for the right player. A top tier 2C or any tier 1C to pair with Aho, a superstar winger like Kaprizov, a top tier RHD are guys that would qualify there. Just so rare that they come available and when they do every single team is bidding for them. Plus I do think we have assets to pull off a big trade without moving Blake, if we do want to keep him that badly. Which Rod's usage of him and trust in him suggests may be the case...

Stankoven is a fit, I’m not so sure about Nadeau. He brings a skillet that the Hurricanes sorely lack, but is he ever going to be able to play the way RBA demands? Personally, I think there’s enough doubt there internally for the Canes that he’s the one most likely traded out of the smaller righties. I’d also hope they’d be very careful if they do consider trading Nadeau. This summer will be very interesting.
I think a lot of these types of decisions depend on this season's playoffs and players' performance in the various series. Blake has looked like he belongs, Nadeau did what he needed to do in the A, and Stank has had a nice bit of business so far in the playoffs. Regardless, if we get bounced because of lack of scoring or, more to the point, because we get out muscled, I could see more willingness to make a trade that includes one of these guys (assuming the right target). However, if things go well in the playoffs, then I see us making a tweak or two around the edges or making a single blockbuster trade at the draft, but not really messing too much with team chemistry. Things will clarify in late June.

I think with the whole Rantanen fiasco and the thought that went into this past summer’s FA acquisitions, “fit” in RBAs system is pretty much the biggest factor in determining which players stick around and which ones don’t. The whole “Stankoven was born to be a Hurricane” thing is a bit much, but you can’t deny he’s come in and pretty much fit seamlessly. Blake even more, just fits the RBA system. I bet they can teach Nadeau how to fit, but again, I have my doubts.

Nadeau, though, brings that shot, which no other prospect in the system can hold a candle to and 32goals as a teenager in a men’s league is very encouraging. I don’t think it’s a given Nadeau is dealt, I just see him as the most likely out of him, Blake and Stankoven if the choice is going to be made.

I think ideally, this summer they use their picks from Dallas and prospects not named Nadeau or Morrow to add a 2C and potentially a top 4 RD in a trade or 2 and add a wing like Ehlers or Boeser in FA. Getting the 2C and top 4 RD they need though probably does cost Morrow and/or Nadeau though.
