How I feel about the news^^^

EDIT: Just happened to check the wikipedia page for the Falcons and saw this:

"The Springfield Falcons are an ice hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL). They play in Springfield, Massachusetts, at the MassMutual Center and are the proud affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League. The Falcons' two main rivals are the Hartford Wolf Pack and the Providence Bruins."

I know anyone can edit pages, but still...

Made perfect sense from a logistical and marketing standpoint.

It would be great if the Cincinnati Cyclones and CBJ would affiliate for similar reasons.

A well conceived and executed comprehensive marketing program could be of great benefit for the CBJ in terms of both ticket sales and television ratings. The Jackets don't have a very good presence in Cincinnati. Affiliation with the ECHL Cyclones could remedy that problem.

This is great for the jackets. This will help them grow the following in Cleveland that they have been missing. And will give people including myself a reason to go to the monsters game and actually care about them.

This is honestly an obvious move that should have happened a long time ago. But better now than never.

Personally I love your post.... for over a decade I couldn't understand why the Cleveland fan base refused to pick up on the Jackets... I know the issues with the Barons but I also know Cleveland is a winter town.. Keep us informed about the Monsters!!! :)

Cleveland just isn't a hockey town. Barons have nothing to do with it. Most people have zero idea there was ever a pro team here.

Problem with Cleveland is hockey season runs concurrent with basketball season. And the cavs own those months. Browns own the others. There just isn't a base here. This is a pro town. Most people don't care about minor league hockey. I'm sure if the jackets moved up here they would love them.

There's also no media attention paid to the jackets. They are never talked about on sports talk radio and the games aren't even broadcasted over the radio here.

So that's why Cleveland hasn't picked up on the jackets.

Thank you, the CBJ never winning anything for over a decade hasn't helped either.... I'm thinking the next decade might be different, call into those local radio shows, get active.... I'm thinking the CBJ might break the glass ceiling next year, stick with it.. ;)

I, for one, welcome our new insect overlord.

At least he'll show up on mascot night, unlike our prior parent club's mascot.

Id disagree about Cleveland not being a hockey town. Top 5 in attendance for the AHL the past 5 years or so. Plus Jackets coverage has picked up in recent years, I do agree that they compete with the Cavs and Browns, and its not a hockey first town.

Let me finish.... The CBJ might surprise many in Cleveland if given the exposure....

I think the three major networks in Cleveland trash the Blue Jackets in favor of the loser Browns, Indians and Cavaliers.....

The #1 city in the world over rated for sport is Cleveland, Ohio.... a joke.

Did you get mugged in Cleveland or something? Jeez.

And cbjwennberg, yeah Milano used to play for the junior barons that play out of Parma, so he's familiar with the area.

I can't contain how pumped I am for this. The crowds are awesome at monsters games and is starving for a winner. It's gonna explode with a,winning team.

PA Announcer: Ryan Pritt. This guy's hiring was so unpopular (he replaced a wildly popular pa announcer) that, to this day, prior to the "one minute to go" announcement each period, fans yell "hey, bozo, how much time is left?" but it's more good-natured now. I think.

In-Arena hosts are a rotating group that can be hard to keep track of. The most notable one is Olivier Sedra. That's because he is the Cavaliers PA announcer. Where else can you see an NBA (and main Olympic basketball) PA announcer working as an in-arena host for an AHL game.

Also, speaking of things you normally don't see at an AHL game. The Humungotron.

Is a scoreboard this big overkill for an AHL game? Yes. Is it awesome? Yes.

The AHL allows more time for intermission entertainment, so an NBA-style dance team is feasible. They are known as the Monster Hockey Girls (I think Monster Energy Drink already had copyrighted Monster Girls to describe their spokesmodels).

Who cleans the ice, you may ask? The answer is a trio of Hanson Brothers impersonators called the Mullet Brothers (needless to say, AHL official timeouts involve clearing less of the ice than their NHL equivalent).

http://www.lakeeriemonsters.com/fans/game-entertainment/mulletbros

On a related note, after Pritt announces "official timeout", fans customarily respond "what official?"

The mascot is Sullivan C. Goal. a seagull who everyone just calls Sully.

We do not have a permanent anthem singer (the Browns are the only Cleveland team who do [an opera singer named Benjamin Czarnota]), but we do have fans yelling "hit somebody" right before the anthem. Yes, the Monsters have tried to stop it and failed abysmally, but at least it's not Toledo, where fans yell it in the middle of the anthem.

The team holds a 50/50 raffle and a post game chuck-a-puck contest (does anybody need an explanation of this?) each game.

Friday night games usually have post-game skates as well as dollar hot dogs and sodas at the concession stand while Thursdays have discounted beer and Sundays have postgame autograph sessions.

Next post: where to sit at the Q.

There are two bad places to sit at Quicken Loans Arena (despite the obvious issues of sitting too close to the glass):

The lower of the the two lower decks down the sides (the lower deck on the sidelines is split into a lower deck and what was the club seats when the arena opened [nowadays even the Cavaliers do not use all of that second deck for club seats]). These seats are on a very shallow slope and do not provide a good view for hockey. I have only sat there when the tickets were free.

The attack twice. this may seem weird, but there is a reason they are not good seats: The Monsters focus season sales of cheaper price categories towards the attack once (when I bought my half-season package, I inquired about attack twice and was told it was unavailable) and tend to use attack twice (especially the upper half of the lower deck[the upper deck is curtained off for Monsters games until the lower deck is near selling out]) for comp/promotional tickets. this leads to sitting near a bunch of people who act as if they know everything about hockey despite actually wondering if the puck is blown up or stuffed (yes, I realize that it is in fact solid, that was a paraphrase of a Joe Tait quote about corporate types sitting courtside at basketball games) rather than the fairly knowledgeable crowd who sit in the attack once end. Also, you get to see Monsters warm-ups and, due to the nature of AHL overtime rules, the Monsters attacking during any overtime or shootout that may occur if you sit in the attack once. It is also closer to the area of the concourse with the most going on (activities, merchandise sales, promotional tables).

Miscellaneous:

There are two programs: A glossy program called Faceoff. There are four issues a year (mostly different covers and a new slate of upcoming games being promoted as Faceoff does not contain any player photos/bios) and a roster sheet. Both are on racks placed near each gate into the arena.

Gates open 1 hour prior to faceoff time.

Faceoff is usually 7:00 except for Fridays when it is 7:30 and Sundays which I'm not even sure if they have a standard faceoff time. There is also a 10:45 AM school day game once each year, usually in late February. Actual faceoff times are usually 7 (sometimes 8) minutes later than scheduled faceoff time (sometimes even later if there are lengthy pregame ceremonies [especially when they honor the local youth hockey champions]).

Radio broadcasts are usually split (36 games each) between WKNR 850 (which includes any weekday day games on their daytime-only sister station WWGK 1540) and WHK 1420 (these games can be moved to WHKW 1220 but rarely, if ever, are anymore) with the other three games on 99X (99.1 FM). All games are streamed on the website of the station airing the game.

espncleveland.com (WKNR and WWGK/KNR2)
whkradio.com (WHK)
whkwradio.com (WHKW, just in case)
99xcleveland.com (99X)

WUAB usually airs a few home games on television each season. Is that still on cable down in Columbus?

Actually, the CBS affiliate up here shows Blue Jacket highlights quite often (especially on their 10:00 PM newscast on WUAB, which has a 15-minute sportscast).

A few more things I remembered:

The team's practice facility is OBM Arena in Strongsville (from Columbus, take I-71 North just past the Cuyahoga County line, get off at Royalton Road and turn in the opposite direction of the mall [SouthPark Centre]). Practices are usually open to the public but times are not usually publicized after training camp, so you'd have to call the team (more on that later).

The Jackets may be picking up an extra AHL assistant coach. The aforementioned Jock Callander has served as an assistant coach for practices and non-televised games (he is the color commentator for tv games) while being on the Monsters payroll in a PR/ticket sales position (dealing with youth hockey teams, IIRC). I haven't heard if he's going to San Antonio with the Avalanche or staying in Cleveland but am guessing the latter unless the Avs offer him some knd of fast track to an NHL assistant job.

The team's phone number is (216) 420-0000. The people who answer the phone are generally helpful, but be prepared for a sales pitch. Unlike the Cavaliers, who allow you to ask the receptionist to transfer you to a specific department, the Monsters (and the Gladiators) do all of their dealing with the public via their ticket reps.

The team's play-by-play announcer is Doug Plagens, while he is also the Gladiators play-by-play guy, he will call all Monsters games unless ill or unable to make it due to a personal schedule conflict as the Monsters are his top priority assignment (the Gladiators have a high school sports announcer from Lorain County [one county to the west of Cleveland along the lake] who can fill in when they conflict with the Monsters).
