It's clearly Marner right now. He's one of the 10 best players in the league! Marner is an offensive wizard, is good defensively, is a complete player. And I'm saying that as a Sens fan, who would certainly prefer the Devils' player to be better than the Leafs' player.

Sure, Hughes might be as good or better in 2-4 years, but the question is who is better now.

neither off to a promising start this playoffs.
Hughes was very good. Set up teammates, scored on his PS, but even with no points that was a good showing. Threw a shoulder into Kreider on the boards too, he was engaged all night. None of that game was on him.

I love how people just say "Hughes sucks defensively" with no evidence or explanation.

Let me guess - he's short and sucks at faceoffs, therefore he's bad defensively?
He doesn't suck like he did as a rookie, but it's definitely not his strength.

That being said, the answer to this poll is Hughes right now and for the next 10 years. Marner is great, but Hughes is an elite world class talent.

This is interesting as both great but ones a centre others a winger and the centre is 4 years younger just coming into his own. Both beautiful players but I'm taking Hughes here.
Doesn't matter I'd the winger plays like a center. This is 2023. Centers and wingers and positions are just titles more often than not. Players are leaning heavily into position less hockey or taking multiple jobs.

So many misses, bless your heart.

For the record, I don't think 1 playoff series is a good sample to answer this question, but then again, people will weight 95% of their opinion on a prospect based on a 2 week tournament on this site.
hughes had 0 points and marner had 1a, both in lopsided losses when that was posted. good try tho.

I'd like to introduce you to this wonderful thing called the internet. In the future, you can save yourself some embarrassment by taking 15 seconds to actually look up something before you confidentially speak in error.

Ooooooh. So neat. The amount of L's you are taking on here recently is reminiscent of the Habs record this year

oh the irony.

wait till you find out about time stamps lol. it was posted part way through game 1.

cringe gotcha attempt.

So you made a judgement on his game in the 1st period? lol chompin at the bit to log on and hate on the Leafs eh? God bless ya.

i voted hughes prior to the playoffs. i just think there is more potential there.

i had high expectations given the context. marner and the leafs needing to beat a familiar foe to finally get past round 1. and jack hughes 1st ever playoff game after essentially a 100 pt season.

Well, I see now you're the type to make your judgements after 1 period of a 7 game series. Says a lot. I think both players are going to make this take look pretty bad.

you may want to reread what you quoted.

myself and most people who voted made our judgements prior to period 1. this poll is at least a week old.

Of course it is.

But how many people stopped in during the 1st period and said "They have both been pretty bad in the playoffs" lol

Marner is far better defensively currently but Hughes is much younger and has time to get better offensively and defensively. It's a tough choice cause Marner has been consistently a top player for years now.

Not a Leafs fan. I hate the Leafs.

But Marner is the better player today (like literally on 04/22/2023).

He's not a better asset than Hughes is, and he has a much, much worse contract. Probably has a bigger ego and sense of entilement too somehow. Plays a less important position.

But he's still a better player today. He might not be by next season. Definitely not if we consider contracts and age.

And it's gotta be Marner today if you need to win one game - he's a better #1W than Hughes is a #1C by a small margin as of now.
