At the same time, if he continues putting up these numbers then it makes it much less risky to trade Mrazek and go with a cheaper backup.

Yep. Hoping Mrazek's able to go on a heater at the right time and move him for a genuine prospect at position. Go get Craig Anderson when the Sabres begin to dip. Perfect type for a stint in the playoffs. And when Anderson gets hot -- even now I suspect -- he's very capable of tilting the ice all on his own.

Are you implying dealing Mrazek at the TDL?

I swear people here are allergic to depth. Its always a good idea to have a capable tandem going into playoffs.

As long as both of their salaries combined doesn't reach a crazy dollar amount. I want both if both can help us.

That’s crazy.
8 years at 2.5 per. I think he'd take it. he's 30 and only made 4 million in his career thus far. offer him another 20 and he calls it a great career. The AVV would be great and we could look at ways to bury it in 4 years if we had to. But Campbell at a 2.5 million hit would be great.

Can't see the player taking it.

It's a tough one, still don't think he's proven enough to sign long term now. I'd rather they wait until he's got more games under his belt.

Yeah that would be safer but then he will want more for sure. Sometimes we have to gamble to make it work. Right now Jack gets security and we get a great AAV. If I was Jack I would take 20 more million rather than sign a 3 year deal for 12, and hope to get another 8 down the road somehow. It's not like he is 24 and still has a good decade of high calibre play ahead of him.

I think $15M (4 x 3.75M) with a 5th year player option for $4.5M is fair for both parties. Sets him up for perennial playoff contention, career and financial stability, and a $4.5M hedge if he underwhelms. The $4.5M won't kill the Leafs either, and the 4 years of term gives Campbell just enough for 1 final 3-4 year contract at market value circa 2026.

At a minimum he's going to want more than Mrazek.
His agent will prefer 5 x 4 instead of 8 x 2.5.

Oh for sure if he can get the 20 million now on a shorter term, it's a no brainer. I don't think we offer Jack 4 million per year today. Maybe by season's end we have no choice. I would throw an 8 year deal out there anyway.

Uh, guys. This is Toronto. The city that overpays for players. Agents know this. They will ask for the maximum possible payday. In all likelihood they will get it, and they know it.

Mrazek has 3 times as much NHL experience. And has played behind tire fires - he seems to play better under those circumstances. Because of that, I see 3-3.5 tops for Campbell.

If the price is right, absolutely.

Are you implying that I'm "allergic" to depth? It seems so. If so, I'm certainly allergic to the wrong sort of depth, and this club has compromised depth throughout our skaters.

And if you think Craig Anderson (even at 40) isn't an upgrade to our back-up and thus, to our depth all around, then I'd be interested why you think Mrazek's the better apparent back-up option?

Can you think of a better way to spend $3.1M if this team is able to gain momentum?

You think 40 year old Anderson who has played a grand total of 10 games in over a full calendar year is an upgrade on Mrazek?

Worth noting that Mrazek had 2 50+ game played seasons and 2 40+ game seasons played in the league.

Up until this year Campbell's biggest NHL season was 29 games (split between reg season and playoffs).

He may be able to use Mrazek as base, but imo he's not holding as much leverage

To be fair only Marner and Nylander are overpaid compared to their like peers.

Matthews would've gotten an offersheet of whatever he pleased if he hit RFA market. He's a huge ticket draw ... and a franchise player.

Same goes to Tavares he had plenty of suitors and I'm sure all of them would have paid more than the 11 he got from Toronto in fact San Jose was confirmed to be offering much more than Toronto.

Rielly would likely have gotten more if he waited until UFA this offseason too.

All in all Dubas has done pretty good outside of Marner and Nylander (compared to their like players at the time of signing).

Nylander signed right between Ehlers and Pastrnak at the time of his signing, while having 2 seasons of top line production vs 1 for either of those guys, albeit Pasta having a slightly better season. He literally could not be signed to a deal more in line with his comparables…

nylander is in. No way overpaid he fell in exactly with his comparables. But he held out.
Marner is probably 1.5- 1.75 overpaid

I would be extremely surprised if Campbells AAV came in below $5 mil. Anything in the 2’s & 3’s looks absurd to me.
