It's funny how some on Fan590 still there's no way Jack takes over and Freddy is still the man. Not seeing it for some time now. And I notice a different energy when he's in net

same on TSN1050 Overdrive. They all think the Leafs will only go as far as Freddy takes them. Campbell is just doing his job as a good backup. Play some games and let the starter get healthy.

Im still not sold he is a 100% 1A, Having said that I'm willing to roll with him. He's been great although a low amount of games.
I wonder how he would be with 60 games a year like were used to with Freddy

I'm not entirely sure if Campbell will be the 1A or 1B of the tandem moving forward (starting next season). I don't know that I see either part of the tandem starting 60 games though, and that's in the event the schedule can somehow be restored to its previous 82 games by then. I'm thinking something not likely to exceed a 50-32 split at the higher end.

One of the reasons for the Leafs failures for so long has been the Country Club coddling of players. A sense of entitlement that in some cases media tacitly support, even when they don't know it.

You want to earn your position on the team? Win something. Franchises that demand success generally beat others that embrace nepotism.

As Dubas said at the beginning of the year, I paraphrase, in effect: "nobody on the team (last years) has won anything to be in a position to feel they are untouchable or entitled." Amen.

The only metric that matters is success and wins. Disregarding a players success simply because he hasn't been in the role before reeks of perpetual acceptance of mediocrity.

This organization certainly has lived up to that reputation. Time to demand team success, however it is achieved and with whomever it is achieved with.

I've liked Campbell from the first game he played for us and also from the story of his NHL career...Apparently Dallas changed his style from the beginning and it wasn't until he got to LA that their goalie coach allowed him to go back to his original style.. That caught my attention as I always wonder how many professional athletes never get to their potential due to coaching and circumstances... Hopefully he gets a solid chance here... We'll need 2 good goalies down the stretch and into the playoffs though and I hope Freddy can get back to his calmness and "non-swimming" in the net... He plays much better that way and when not overly active less pucks seem to go "through" him as well... We can only hope they both get healthy and stay that way.

Campbell has earned the right to get a #1 look right now, even if Freddy was healthy. Campbell has pedigree and at one time was thought to be #1 goalie material. There is no specific template for a goalie to be successful. Keefe owe's Campbell that right now. The bottom line is down the stretch if Freddie comes back and takes the #1 and has 4 shutouts...I still dont trust that Anderson can stay focused or perform big in the playoffs. Its been too many letdowns.

Wow. I don't watch/listen to those guys often but when I do they don't seem that dumb. But ... that's just so ... dumb.

There's plenty of examples of older goalies becoming successful starters around Jacks age. I'm not saying he's going to be Hasek but could he be Kuemper or Dubnyk? Sure.

If he can establish himself it would be a massive win for our cap situation. Difference between Fred and Jack could cover Hymans extension.

I'm not too concerned that Campbell was never a starter. We're not asking him to play 60+ games. There are only 24 games left in the season.

My concern is that he's injury prone. Spent more time injured than not. If Campbell gets injured tomorrow we are f***ed.

Also I think we play 17 games over the next month. That is a heavy load on any goalie. Will Hutch be the back up? I mean we only play Edmonton twice in that stretch.

what is Jack's actual injury history, btw?

this is the war we keep fighting.

the legend of Fred in this town is inexplicable.
Because it all stems from this ongoing narrative that the Leafs are just this wacky all-offense team that's terrible defensively and the only reason they don't get scored on 6 times every night is cause of Freddy standing on his head.

Forget about all the metrics that have the Leafs as one of the best defensive teams in the league this year. I think those halfwits on 1050 actually know this, but they just continue with the narratives that keep people listening.

Leafs’ crease belongs to Campbell for now - TSN.ca

TORONTO — For the time being, the Maple Leafs’ net belongs to Jack Campbell.

Coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed as much on Wednesday when he shared there is “no timeline attached” to the return of Frederik Andersen from a nagging lower-body injury.

Andersen has been sidelined since Saturday, and Keefe said the message from Toronto’s medical staff is not to expect Andersen back in the mix for at least seven days.

Andersen missed all three of Toronto’s practices this week heading into Thursday night’s game in Ottawa. Campbell will get that start for the Leafs, his second straight since returning from a leg injury, and the Leafs will cautiously increase his workload from there.

“He's going to have an opportunity to play more here now, and we have to just make sure that we manage that well and not put him in positions where he may reinjure himself,” Keefe said. “We want to be smart with it. We'll take it one game at a time, and really one day at a time. Soupy responded very well [after the last game] and that was a big test, that’s really positive.”

Campbell originally hurt his leg back on Jan. 24 against Calgary, and came back for one start in Edmonton on Feb. 27 where he re-aggravated the problem. He returned to start Saturday’s game against the Flames, posting a second straight shutout to give him a 4-0-0 record on the season with .968 save percentage.

Andersen is now in a similar position to what Campbell just went through. Andersen originally suffered the injury on Feb. 15 against Montreal, and he came back March 3 in a win over the Oilers.
But Andersen’s play post-injury never matched the level he was at before. In the 10 games prior, he was 7-2-1 with a .906 save percentage; in the nine games after, Andersen was 2-7-0 with an .876 save percentage.

His start last Friday was a particularly abysmal 14-save performance, with a season-low .778 save percentage. Campbell started the next night, helping Toronto halt a three-game losing streak.
“I feel really good and after the game, it was definitely a relief to feel really good with my body,” Campbell said. “The trainers have done a great job with me every single day and I'm thankful to the coaches for giving me the time [to heal]. I am feeling really good and excited to back out there whenever my number's called.”

Campbell has never been a true starter in his NHL career. He appeared in a career-high 31 games for the L.A. Kings in 2018-19, and played in 20 more games the following season before being traded to Toronto in Feb. 2020. The Leafs tapped him in only six games prior to the NHL’s shutdown due to COVID-19.

When he is in the crease, Campbell seems to find ways to connect positively with teammates – sometimes without even realizing it.

There was one such moment in Saturday’s game that ended up going viral. Campbell was spotted after a whistle giving defenceman Justin Holl a hearty wink, surprising even himself with the action.
“I had no idea I even had the ability to wink. But you learn something new every day,” Campbell said. “I literally didn't know I winked until I got home and saw something online. We always have a good time out there, but I couldn't believe I winked. It was pretty funny.”

Holl was amused too, especially considering it was in reaction to a broken play of sorts.

“There was a goalie exchange behind the net, and I called for the puck but had wanted it a little harder, so it was kind of a miscommunication,” Holl explained. “So I went up to him after and was like ‘my bad’ and he said ‘my bad’ back with the wink. It was pretty funny. It was legendary actually.”

Any frustrations Campbell has experienced this season haven’t made their way into his demeanour or diminished his play, which is why he’s such a popular a figure in Toronto’s room. As uncertainty swirls around Andersen, confidence in Campbell is at an all-time high.

“Soup is definitely very positive, and it’s very noticeable,” Holl said. “He’s just so relaxed and he’s having fun out there. I think everyone knows when you’re having fun is when you’re playing your best.”

why would you build a contender and then put a complete unknown in net? no GM would do that if it wasn't an emergency. Like the started being hurt.

Who's unknown? The 11th overall pick with a career .919sv%?

Way more known than cup winning guys like Binnington and Murray were.

Hasek had less games than Campbell at the same age with a save percentage of .893 in is career so far when he took the job with Fuhr as a backup .
He went on to a hall of fame career and is probably the best goalie that has ever lived.
