The irony is Provorov doesn’t have to make any great strides offensively to justify this contract; he doesn’t have to emerge into stardom. 30 points give or take is fine, and I hope his usage reflects his standing on a team bursting with young talent. If he could turn his defensive skill and transition ability into a more cohesive play driving package — a high-end defensive defenseman, said in the most positive connotation possible — then this contract moves the needle. For a player whose subtlety is often his highest praise, it’s in the subtle ways I hope he grows these next 6 seasons as a part of our overall defense corps.

Still wouldn't mind if he got firmware update that would add some offensive flair.

He's fine offensively 5 v 5, from what I watch. His worst problems are trying to do too much on his own. Example, I often see him carrying across the opponent blueline and then doing...nothing useful...he went in head-down, and that's the end of it. Instead of figuring out beforehand that he needs to involve his teammates, in the smartest way he can think of. Which is a very simple problem to address compared to most, in fact I'd be very surprised if that tendancy of his to solo persists.

He’s no stiff and his strong ES production isn’t solely usage. He’s got soft hands with the puck and his head is never down and he moves very well. He has a great wrist shot and can flirt with double digits. He’s got good feel for jumping into the play, either off the rush or finding a seam in the cycle. He’s just not an especially creative playmaker in the offensive zone or someone with notable 1v1 ability along the wall or in open ice. Deception isn’t his strong suit. Never really has been.

I’m skeptical he won’t see PP2 time and isn’t still the de facto #2 on the PP depth chart, despite league worst PP production. I think he plays best at ES with a partner who brings an offensive competent so he doesn’t force things and plays within himself. But this will be on the coaches.

If AV can’t see that Sanheim should anchor PP2, he’s getting off on the wrong foot.

Meltzer had a blog mentioning they'll try to separate duties so that not many players play on both special teams units. I would imagine Ghost and Sanheim would be the two PP defensemen. I could see either of Sanheim or Provorov playing both PP2 and PK though.

Another thing to keep in mind, the biggest fear in giving out a long-term contract is the player will take the money and run, that is, no longer play with fire or workout like a maniac in the off-season.

Provorov is wired to compete, I doubt the contract will have any impact on his ridiculous work ethic.
And he's extremely durable and plays through injuries that would sideline other players (see 2017-18 playoffs).

That mitigates the risk quite a bit.

I find this to be so stupid though. It's a much bigger opportunity to score during pp resp get scored on pk that I would expect for our best players to have bigger impact than at 5on5. Here's a novel idea, why not have a depth players capable of holding their own at ES instead of throwing the likes of lehtera on penalty kill? I don't give a single f*** if Pitlick is best penalty killer in the world if he can't score to save his life and will be liability at even strength.

Here’s the thing, if Provorov is going to be a $10m defenseman, like a true top guy in the league, he’s gotta get PP time and he’s gotta produce on it. If he isn’t or doesn’t, then he’s always on a level below that.

At the end of the day, it’s not the end of the world, it’s not a killer horrible contract, and it could have been worse. We’re paying for hope so hopefully he lives up to it. I know he can, but we’ll see if he will.

What we need most of all is for Provorov to stop getting ****ed over by idiot coaches who want to overuse him and sabotage his play. Give him a good partner, give him an appropriate amount of minutes, take him off the PP and let’s see if he can play like a legit #1. It’s disgusting that we have all these young high potential defensemen and so far none of them have been used properly for more than half a season of their careers.
Every contract has a bit of money built into what the team expects the player will become. Very few contracts are paid for the value the player is today.

This is a very good deal. Over $7M would have been too much, under $6M would have been a steal. This is right in the sweet spot for both sides.

Glad it got done so Provy can start camp with everyone else.

Onwards and upwards; just get TK in and Hagg out and we're ready to go.

Sorry, never heard of him.

(I got tired of being called that anytime I explained some concerns, so I try not to talk about him as a player anymore. It seems best for everyone.)

The way around that is to be the biggest, most shameless Provy fanboi in the universe. That allowed me to point out concerns all year. I've probably banked enough fanhood to do it for another season if need be.

I'm optimistic. Better times ahead of us: NHL level coaching staff plus functional playoff bound team will take some of that insane pressure from Provorov's shoulders as well and he should bounce back nicely.
