'98 may be a stronger year for Canadian defensemen than '97, but it looks like a weaker year for skilled forwards, at first sight. Not a Strome or Marner, let alone a McDavid.

So much booing when the Russians were having their shootouts. Seriously have some respect!

It is played in Czech republic/Slovakia. Most of the people hate Russia for what they have done to us in the past. That's why they are booing.

You always win and i hate it...

Well I recall that the Finns won the recent WJC against Sweden in OT...frustrating game it looked really good for the Swedes but then the Swedes just ran out of gas...the Finns impressed with thier stamina there.

Well the Russia are not the most popular country at the moment anywhere(?). Still there should be a clear line between sport and politics.

all the Russian teams seem to be the B team.
those shoot out players were from your F team.
LOL

The best players from the 1998 group are going to be playing in Canada this fall, so they are ineligible for the U18 team. The Russian U18 team will be an entry in the MHL Junior League this season, and they will play a full league schedule. So if you're off to NA, you obviously can't play for the U18 team. Of particular note among the missing are Dmitriy Sokolov from Omsk and Dmitriy Abramov from Chelyabinsk, who both have big-time offensive talents with the potential to be stars.

The guys that played against Canada today are the guys that nobody in the CHL wanted, I guess. But after playing together for an entire season in the MHL, this team could be good in the World U18 Championship in April. Huge upgrade at coach with Vitali Prokhorov!

Can't speak for the rest of the Country but this group from the West is well above average. Lots of Pro upside.

No denying that there is a lot of talent out West this year.

In the QMJHL, 1998 group is not as bad as 1996 but weaker than 1995 or 1997.

I think the big difference is Ontario. There is an unusual dearth of elite talent in that province (1998 group). When you look at it, considering that Chychrun played in the USA until he was 15 and Brown until he was 16, it could be the first year ever (?) that only 1 Ontario-trained player is picked in the top-20 of an NHL draft (McLeod).

Still prefer this team to the 1994 one though. Lots of those players will be picked in the 15-30 range in the 2016 NHL draft, just no surefire top-10 pick besides maybe McLeod who has been very impressive.

Canada's defense is immense. Wouldn't surprise if fabbro is a top 10 pick.

damn shame we hadn't our A team. we could have crushed that canadian team as an overripen tomato ... or not

Why is the younger Nikita Popugayev playing with CSKA juniors and not U18? That dude is a monster.

So, they are booing 17 y.o guys for smth their grandfathers did under a totalitarian Soviet regime which killed more russians than all the eastern euros combined, while destroying a historical russian state in the process?
Makes sense. Should have beaten them up after game though, booing is weak.

PS Seriously, if this was for rivarly sake then OK, but CZE or SVK didn't even play.

Canada wins the SO. Congrats. Great effort by what amounts to a Russian B team. I'm so impressed with the job that Prokhorov has done. Goodbye Rumyantsev forever.

No, Russia brought most 'A' players, minus the team leaders of course (Abramov, Sergachyov, Sokolov, Popugayev, maybe Kuznetsov)

LOL, Come on, it's an A team without Sokolov, Abramov and Sergachyov

Riiight, it's a good thing the visiting team never gets booed or whistled in the most popular sport in the world or in other sports when the crowd favorite is playing.

Välimäki scores a one-timer on powerplay. Finland lead 2-1 in the first period.
