Well, I somewhat looking forward to this, hopefully Czechs make some success.
It's not the most prestigious tournament (Or is it? :dunno:) but it's always nice to see some wins.

Also, a minor thing, you should probably change the main page link to the english translated one: http://hlinkamemorial.com

Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp

From July 31-Aug. 4, 43 players – four goaltenders, 15 defencemen and 24 forwards – will participate in practices and three Red-White intrasquad games at the Markin MacPhail Centre.

Of the 43 players who have been invited to the selection camp, 22 will be selected for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team for the 2015 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, Aug. 10-15 in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia. Canada has won the summer under-18 tournament seven consecutive years and 10 of the last 11.

Does this event usually feature the best U-18s from each country?

I know Canada tends to be stromger at this event than the U-18 WHC held in the spring on account of there being no conflict with the CHL schedule.

What about the rest of the teams? Are these the best squads?

in general, yes! except for the U.S. though. It seems as though Hockey Canada and USAH got to together in a boardroom somewhere and decided which tournament each wanted more. USAH got the IIHF April tournament as Hockey Canada has no interest in changes to the CHL schedule, and Hockey Canada gets the summer Hlinka tournament to strut their stuff.

This year though the Russians have their own fulltime U18 National Team Development Program that will be minus 2-3 of their best U18 players because they opted to play in the CHL.

BTW, I'm not that high on the Canadian 1998 born players. This could be the year we finally lose a Hlinka tournament. I hope I'm wrong though. I'm curious to see how these 98s look.

Swedish team looks pretty weak. I don't see them standing a chance against the best teams unless they improved a lot during the summer. A couple of guys should stand out but this age group doesn't look very deep. The Russian team from last season looked really really strong, I think they could win it this year.

Finland is missing all the top 98 born players (Puljujärvi, Laine, Juolevi, Niemeläinen, Välimäki) who are with the U20 team at the same time.

US team has some good prospects up front this year : Yamamoto, Tufte, Wait and Gettinger. Sweden seems much much weaker than usual.

It is supposed to be the most important tournament for the age group, more than the U18 WC, because NA players aren't available for the WC.

Actually most the better players other than a few in the CHL playoffs play in the U18 WC. It is in April right before the draft and anyone who has the possibility of getting drafted will play in the U18 WC unless they are in the CHL playoffs. This tournament in August does not have the best players from every country playing. The US National team does not allow any of their U18 or U17 players to play in the event. The players in USA chosen are a second tier level. Most scouts want to see guys in true form in March and April not guys during the summer. Although it is a good chance for guys to be seen and gain some international play experience. U18 WC in April is overall more prestigious.

It's more prestigious to the US. How many other countries bring an actual team?

The USNTDP is meant to succeed at the under 17 and under 18.

But it's only the US. All others bring their top rosters.

No they don't. We always send the best players to the U-20 tournament in Lake Placid and some other countries do as well (if they have players good enough for those teams). The real important tournament for this age group is the U-18 WJC.

I know Finns and Swedes have sent players to the U-20 tournament if there have been good enough players to fit in that team. This tournament gets very little media attention compared to the U-18 WJC (which doesn't get that much either due to the proximity of the mens Worlds).

Ofc U18 worlds is more prestigious. This is just an invitational tournament, and the players are almost a year younger(i.e. worse compared to what they'll be with another season under their belts). This is more of scouting/showcase tournament.

all the leaders from the last year moved to na. so they won't be playing there. i doubt russia'll win it.
