I agree, Kucherov is a dominant, stand out player for multiple years in a row.
He is. But that doesn't make him generational.
From 2016-17 (a big sample)
Kucherov is 4th in points behind Drai and Mackinnon. He's 9th in goals. His PPG pace is 2nd behind McDavid and that's impressive. But he doesn't score goals at as high a rate as Mackinnon and Drai. And they're both younger players. (Mackinnon only had 53 points in the first season of this sample. Likewise, Drai had a 71 point season and was only 21.)
Change it to 2019-2020 and those three are dead even in points per game and Mack and Drai have much better goal numbers.
He's among the best players of this generation. If you want to give him an edge over Mack and Drai that's okay - I'd disagree, esp with the goal numbers - but that's fine. But even if he is better than those guys it's not by much and he's a lot older than they are. Moreover, McDavid's head and shoulders better than all of them.
He's a first ballot HOFer. Amazing player. But generational he ain't. He's among a group of elite players that are competing for 2nd best player in the world. Want to say he's the best among that group? You could make a good argument for it. But those players are scoring goals and putting up similar points. It's not a no brainer by any stretch.
A guy like Steve Yzerman for example put up insane numbers over a six year stretch before getting hurt. He almost joins Lafleur/Bossy/Gretz in the 6 straight 50/100 club - misses by a few goals one season. Over that stretch he's the highest scoring player in hockey not named Wayne/Mario. His AVERAGE was 54 goals and 124 points per 82. He's also head and shoulders above everyone else - and we're talking about guys like Mark Messier. Is he considered generational? No. I'd argue that he has a better case than Kucherov to be called generational though.
That's why I don't like to hear 'generational' thrown around with Demidov. He's a great prospect and hopefully he delivers. He has franchise talent written all over him. But franchise player isn't generational. Let's not stick him with a label he's not likely to live up to.
