Player Discussion Ivan Demidov: Welcome to Montreal

What about the major defensive mistakes of Mike Matheson and other players? No one else makes mistakes? Is that an argument for not playing him?

This is exactly what we're talking about when we mention other traditional coaches who give leeway to veterans but not young players. If a kid is not put in a high stakes position, how will he learn? These playoffs should also serve as a learning experience. We're not the Maple Leafs where winning is the only viable option.

So because you can't evaluate a pospect's qualities over a large sample size, therefore he should never play in important situations? You've seen the abilities. You have a preliminary evaluation. Now, if that evaluation is positive, you play him, and you continue to evaluate as you go along, simple as that.

Anyway, I think this argument is moot. MSL will play him and try to use that ace up his sleeve.

Mike Matheson, the defenseman? The guy who plays 30 minutes a night?

The Matheson persecution has to stop. He plays tough minutes and gave his PP spot to Hutson. The team needs him.

You clearly brought him up rather than Laine, who is not getting ice time because of his bad play.

Idk who brought up Pezzetta but he’s not playing.

Nothing St Louis does indicates he isn’t hiving rookies and young players their due when they’re playing the most minutes on the team. A russian kid in his second nhl game on a team trying to win to get in the playoffs should probably not play 20-25 minutes.

I agree that Kovalev is the closest we have in meaningful comparison skill-wise. Having seen like you Kovalev’s whole career, I want to be on the record right now that Demidov will be superior.

Demidov has nowhere near Kovalev's talent, but I agree Demidov will be a more productive player.
This is a great interview with 1990s Pens' assistant Troy Ward. He talks about both Kovalev's talent and motivation/mindset. Starts at around 37:00.

Dude just stop it with the arguments. This thing started by me saying that Demidov should get regular shifts and get the opportunity to play an important role in the playoffs, and if MSL doesn't do so because he wants to play if safe, then I wasn't something I would support.

Then it became a shiny new toy argument, which I responded by saying that it's not becauae I want to see a shiny new toy, but because of the quality of the player. Then you came in by "oh but we don't know the quality because it's only been 2 games, and he makes defensive mistakes..."

You're the one pointing out defensive mistakes as a reason. I'm pointed out that everyone makes mistakes, like Matheson. He still plays because he's needed, and because he brings more than his mistakes. Which is why you need to evaluate Demidov in the same context. Does he bring more than his mistakes?

He does play tough minutes. He also plays them very badly. I don't know that anyone is suggesting we give Demidov McDavid minutes, but 17-18 seems pretty reasonable for a talent like him.

Kovalev had a heck of a wrist shot and could stick handle in a phone booth, but I think this kid skating is superior. Maybe far superior on his edges. Kovalev would resort to his wrist shot, this kid just goes around people with his great skating.

I saw plenty of you tubes but never high resolution like I can now. We shall see how good his skating is in the next 4 or hopefully 24 games...

Demidov doesn't have far superior edge work to Kovalev. That is an insane claim. Kovalev had some of the best edge work the NHL had seen at the time he played and a significant part of why he was able to stick handle like he did.

The kid has insane talent, front to back...............remembering back, kovalev has insane talent, but seemed bored at times.....his effort was not always there. The game was important to Kovy, and then it wasn't.

Go figure........

I don't think Demidov will allow himself to get bored ala Kovy. The drive seems so much more from #93

MSL seems to be top toeing around the vets, careful how he uses the kid......but nothing wrong wtih 16-18 minutes.............10 minutes is not enough

I don't think it was boredom, i believe Kovalev was upset at the effort of some of his teammates, the Kostitsyn brothers antics, and the party click. That made him pout a bit. Kovalev was at his best when the pressure was on and his tires were being pumped, he thrived off of that.

a heck of a wrist shot, yes , but he was taking a lot of time to do so; He used a very long motion from the back, sliding on the ice, to put all his force on it

No, he's in his learning process, so he should play on the 4th line until he deserves to be promoted to play on the 3rd. Next season, we'll see after December, if he can get some shifts on the second line - Claude Julien

Drive is something that as a generalization Russians struggle with. Ovy quit on his team regularly in the playoffs when the team got down in a game or series in his early years.
