Player Discussion Ivan Demidov: Welcome to Montreal

Can you guys stop thinking Laine-Demidov is going to work?

No because I just watched it work last night. And that was their first full game together.

Seemed gelling immediately and I'd expect it to get a lot better with more familiarity.

The center should be someone better at faceoffs than Newhook, but doubt that's gonna change.

Laine is completely cooked, totally useless out there

I’m not sure what the solution is here but Demidov needs more icetime period
Think your wish will be granted in the playoffs.

Made sense sitting him more often then not with a lead with EVERYTHING on the line.

Think will see the coming out party for Demidov this playoff.

My question is do we dress 7 D and have Xhekaj in the line up because we know damn well Wilson and company will start running around trying to crush out players.

We need that presence to counter the for sure assault Washington will unleash.

You don’t bring nail clippers to knife fight!!

I want to believe that MSL will coach differently now that they have made it to the first round. But I need to see it to believe it. He constantly opts to "play it safe" in his mind, which means shortening the bench and playing the bottom lines more. He changes the tactic that got them the lead, to defending the lead. Which from my experience is just a mistake.

If he can change that course completely in the playoffs, kudos to him. I'd love to see Demidov and Laine getting 16-17 minutes out there, caution to the wind and let them cook. That's the only way we'll have a lick of chance in the playoffs, if the first 2 lines produce. Playing 3 lines in 3rd period isn't going to cut it.
I agree Marty has played it safe so far, but I think it was the right choice, especially with Demidov last night. If they had clinched earlier, I think we would’ve seen Demidov get more minutes.

We obviously haven’t seen MSL or this team in the playoffs yet, so we don’t know exactly how he’ll approach things, but I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

He hasn’t been perfect, but I think he’s done a great job overall so far, not just down the stretch here but also with the development of so many young guys since he came in. Much progress has been made, and they have all taken big strides.

I agree with you that the best course would be to leave it largely in the hands of the players from here, and let the young guys find out what winning in the post season is going to take, albeit with a measured, adaptive approach, rather than “caution to the wind” because some of the guys are still going to need a degree of sheltering, being that they are in critical times of development.

I am ok with him playing 10 min last night. We had to defend the lead and were playing our season. I can't imagine the backlash had we lost in regulation because of a non existent backcheck from him like vs the Hawks.

That being said, they will have 3-4 more practices before Game 1 so MSL will get to know the player. I think we will see him play way more starting Monday.

Who's that? Celebrini? Michkov?

It's a different context as Demidov isn't joining a garbage team and thus getting all of the minutes.

The latter, but you're being a bit biased here as Michkov got Rotenberged for a good part of the season and there's a high likelyhood Demigod will get exploitation minutes as a rookie, which is normal.

Demidov (and Hutson) are fortunate that the Habs do have good to great young players and veterans who for the most part played well this year.

Got to feel for players like Bedard and Michkov who play on rather shit teams. I think San Jose is going to get good real fast though.

Chicago intentionally did that, though. So I don't feel bad for them. You reap what you sow.

Michkov I don't feel bad for at all since he deliberately tried to get to Philly. Philly seems like Detroit lite. Over thinking all their big picks outside of Michkov and make really weird trades.

I’ll give you Michkov, so yeah, maybe I’m less sympathetic.

But like you said, Chicago went scorched earth. I don’t feel bad for Chicago at all (for that and other reasons we all know), but for Bedard himself, I do feel for him.

Anyhow, as for Demidov, I feel for him a little having to carry that line 😂

I wonder how difficult it will be for Marty to get good matchups for this line on the road. Laine is a liability at even strength, and Newhook only does one thing: enter the zone with speed (ala Josh Anderson) with very little puck distribution.

It sort of reminds of when Radulov was with us on a line with Danault and Patch. Rads, while being a winger, was the puck distributor for all three.

We would be primed to go on a run if Hughes had used some picks to get us some help at center but oh well. I am okay with the group getting to experience the playoffs no matter how it goes.

Not so sure about the Sharks. They added Celebrini and Smith and had a good season of Granlund and they could only get one more win compared to last season?

I think they’ll be great but it’s going to take time
