Prospect Info: Ivan Demidov (2024 5th OA): SKA St. Petersburg (KHL)

Those KHL contracts are scaring teams away. Michkov the year before, Demidov last year. The KHL is becoming more of a pain in the ass then it’s worth for teams so it’s not surprising teams that can’t afford to take a gamble in the top 5 and want to move past them. We’re hopefully going to be the beneficiary of that.

Yeah but the Russian prospects are 2/2 so I so far there has been little risk.

Which is dumb, because the best youngsters will always go to North America. NHL teams just need a little patience sometimes.

Imo, if a 'Russian Factor' exists, its not because of KHL contracts, but rather keeping guys in North America if they're not in the NHL.

One major factor that influenced the Levshunov pick is in-person scouting, which wasn't possible for Demidov. Your team might have Russian scouts with boots on the ground, but not being able to have your chief scout and hockey ops go see him in person is problematic. In Levshunov's case, he was in the Hawks' backyard at Michigan State.

Many teams were surprised to learn the Demidov was 6'01 192 lbs when he showed up in Florida. Goes to show that many teams did not do proper due diligence.​

As messed up as the KHL is…. it’s taught Demidov to play through some very tuff lessons. It’s an education he would not have been subject to in North America with all its placating to high end talent. I suspect he’ll display a tempered maturity that’s rarely seen in D-2 players.

Why would Chicago's chief scout and hockey ops not be able to see Demidov?
Get on a freakin' plane and go to St. Petersburg. It's not difficult. Despite what your media says, Putin isn't gonna show up and kill you.

I mean didn't Lecavalier say other teams had higher-ups in the country when Montreal's brass was in St. Pete?

Scouting is like anything else, you get what you put into it.
Perhaps it's why Montreal gets Demidov while Chicago is stuck with Levshunov. Sucks for them.

That's their job, it's what this franchise has done so poorly since the 90's. Know your prospects! Passing over Brady, Hughes etc for Kotkaniemi .. still don't like passing over Leonard for Michkov! Anyhoo, they have one job, know your prospects. It seemed the people on HF knew a lot about Demidov, how hard can it be if we understood the hype? Also Levshunov.. he's certainly not looking amazing at all still.

Leonard would had been a great pick for Habs.

This may very well end up being true but there is no evidence to support such a bold assertion. Neither player has stepped foot into the NHL and all possibilities are still open for discussion.

HuGo and team wanted him. Which means that they believe he has character and the defensive capabilities to be successful. He has played Swiss pro for 2 years and 11 games in the AHL. There is enough games to tell if he has the skills and hockey sense to be a good defender. Offensive ability is still to be determined. A winger like Leonard should be far easier to acquire.

There still is no way too accurately or confidently say who will be better. Reinbacher's floor is a bottom pairing dman and Leonard's ceiling is a 1st line winger. Any scenario even close to this has Leonard as the better player.

This example of course is not my prediction as I think both players have warts and the exact opposite could be true. Reinbacher is very far from a sure thing to be an impact player and Leonard has much to prove at the pro level as well.

I really dislike bold proclamations about these types of players especially comparative one's as nobody, including the best scouts can even come close to putting forth such statements without sounding unprofessional and biased.

They are both fantastic prospects and anything other than that simply isn't grounded in relevant evidence.

You are making assumptions as well. Reinbacher's floor is likely 2nd pair. Leonard may be a bust like he was tonight. In any event What I am saying is that it is far easier to get a winger than a RD. Leonard at best is a solid 1st liner unlike Demidov, fpor example, who has far higher potential.
