We drafted the best player available. Unfortunately it was a weak draft. Funny, our first number one overall in 30+ years was in a weak draft too. Still think Slaf will be a really good player but he won't be at that crazy level that some other number ones get to. Won't matter though because we wound up drafting a superstar at 62nd overall anyway.

As God is my witness. If we'd drafted Hutson under the old regime, Therrien would be trying to 'fix' him. And by 'fix' I mean 'coaching' the skill right out of his game. That was what we did here for years. Demidov, Hutson, Caufield... they might not have been ruined but they would've been hindered. Now they won't have that problem. I can't wait to see how Demidov plays next year. I've only seen clips but he looks freaking awesome.
That's one of the reasons I think MSL is such a good fit for a young, developing team. And he's improving as a coach as well, he was as green as you could get when we hired him. You get the sense this team would go through a wall for him.

That 2012 draft was a very weird one. Tell me the last time the the top 4 drafted players were all bust and the only forward that became good players dropped out of the top 10. With hindsight trading down would have been the smart move but this is re-visiting history as Galchenyuk and Yakupov were considered (as pre draft hype) potential superstar forward. I also remember a lot of hype on Forsberg, Terevainen and Hertl but they were considered very good talent but with lesser top end potential. With hindsight it is quite funny to see how draft hype can be deceptive like that.
The right move would've been to have a different coach.

2019 Caufield (who was getting ruined by Mumbles) is an emerging star. Struble will likely have a good long NHL career. RHP and Pitlick at least made the show.

2020 Kaiden Ghule is developing really nicely and looks even better since going back to the left side. Still have to wait on Tuch and Dobes but both are promising and Dobes might even win the starter's job.

2021 is a little early but Maillioux has potential and Roy looks like a steal for where we got him.

Compare that to the black hole during MB's tenure. It looks a lot more like the stretch we had before MB got here when we drafted guys like Subban, Price, McDonnaugh...

Development matters. By now that should be abundantly clear. Our whole team has progressed really well. I expect that as guys like Demidov and Hage come in, they'll continue that trend. MSL was an offensive star himself. It's nice to have that perspective behind the bench. It's only going to help a guy like Demidov to learn from him.

I'm not very confident in either Mailloux or Roy but both still have significant upside, which is more than we can say about a lot of draft picks developed under the previous regime.

Agreed. And we've needed that for so long.

When was the last time we had a coach that players loved playing for? Honestly, probably not in my lifetime. Bowman was a great coach but he was awful to play for. The players hated him. Ruel sucked. Lemaire ran Lafleur out of town long before he should've retired. Jean Perron was a joke. Pat Burns was a very gruff dude. Demers had a reputation for catering to stars but wasn't great with kids....

Now we've got somebody who knows what it takes to be a scoring star in this league. That's only going to help offensive guys like Caufield and Demidov. MB didn't understand this. He was a grinder and tried to build with grinders. I mean, we passed up on Jagr for Pete's sake. And even when he traded for Vanek his coach played him on the 4th line...

The thing I'm interested in seeing is: who's on the first PP? Demidov will eventually be there. So that means somebody goes down. I'm guessing it will wind up being Slaf.

Mailloux was also a special case but we won't go there. :) Forgot Kapanen too. That's another one who could wind up here. We drafted 31st overall that year too.

This is why i actually watch game tape on prospects instead of highlights.

Highlights can influence things for sure. I remember watching KK's highlights and was like wow.

I don't hate Beck but I think Kapanen is the better prospect. Kapanen will be a middle 6F you can play anywhere and Beck will be a bottom 6F at best. Beck really does remind me of Evans. He will be on a long development path and his offensive ability won't show until he is Evans age today. Something like that.

Demidov will be another Hutson and Caufield. He shines right away

For the first time in 30yrs, we have a potent offence. Not complete but taking such nice shape. This is like the 84 Habs. Im happy for the young fans to experience this.

A number of good posts in this thread.
Good stuff.

With that improved development and proper management, the Habs look better to free agents, too.

The team sure looks happy to play and unenthused clubs don’t claw back from deficits to win like this one has.

Not just to be a scoring star but how to be an overall better player and overcome obstacles. All NHL players earn it but he had extra hurdles to overcome - esp the too small perception.

Did anyone reply to him "no shit sherlock"?
Yeah not exactly the hottest take

And then add Demidov. I've said it before but I'm finding it hard to not be irrationally exuberant. We're gonna get better and even more fun to watch

I support you with this. Mailloux and Roy have not rocketed up into our line-up fast but that doesn't mean they still don't have potential. In the past, we would have rushed them due to pour NHL depth and bounced them all over the line-up during their development. Horrible asset management
