Hard disagree. The Crosby hype vastly surpassed Bedard's due to a mix of his pedigree and the circumstances. I don't think we'll see Crosby level hype again. It was the lockout year and it resulted in the biggest draft lottery every drawn. Add to that the fact that he joined Lemieux's Penguins, creating a passing of the guard narrative between generational talents.
Bedard was always seen as a lesser prospect than McDavid. McDavid's speed is something the hockey world had truly never seen, and it turns out that it is the most game-breaking skill of any player in the current era.
Bedard oozes skill but he remains an undersized, one-dimensional forward. That was the case before the draft and is still the case today. Neither Crosby or McDavid had such a knock.
