It is sometimes not the amount of shots stopped that matter but the quality of shots. From all accounts the Redwing defenders have been doing a better job of blocking and reducing most of those quality shots under the new system implemented by McLellan. This was alluded to by the goalies and coaches themselves.

“I think it’s just how cohesive we are as a unit right now -- in the D-zone, in the neutral zone, in the offensive zone,” Talbot told Hockey Night in Canada. “There’s not a whole lot of holes in our game right now. We’re tightening up when we need to, weathering the storm and potting some big goals when we need to. We’re winning a bunch of different ways now, which is a good sign.”

McLellan told media after Saturday’s game: “It’s usually a group effort. Every now and then the goalie just completely steals you one, but I like the way the group is committing to each other.”

Who knows if the Redwings can sustain that pace under McLellan? I certainly hope so at least enough in the regular season to make the playoffs which is a realistic objective considering how close they are to a wc spot.

But then again the same can be said for the Sens, Islanders, the Bluejackets and other playoff contenders based on their current winning form.

We won't know until the end of the regular season. Injuries can easily derail each team's runs and potential moves before the trade deadline by them and other teams can affect their position in the standings.

Each sucked and Wings went on a couple game losing streak when they came back from their injuries. Teams hit lulls when their goalie comes back from time off. I expect the same for Ullmark and the Sens.

Sens have a hot goalie winning games now. I can see that getting disrupted when Ullmark returns.

Wings (as a whole; offense, GAA, goaltending, winning) only need to keep being "unsustainable" until late June.
