Imagine thinking goalies come back from a long recovery and start hot...

Especially when said team suffers from anorexia nervosa offense.
Its hilarious because the red wings have the same amount of goals for as the sens, but have let in 20 more goals against over the same number of games played.

Red wings have the 13th worst goals against record so far. Sens have 6th best.

And then there's the whole thing about how Ullmark has a better GAA and Sv% than any goalie playing for the wings, and has recorded 3 less wins than Talbot who's played 6 more games.

Senators will hit a lull when Ullmark returns.

Wings play Jackets and Sens two more times each. Perfect opportunity for DET to leapfrog them both. Wings are 13-4-1 since a coaching change. If they keep doing what they are doing, they are in like flynn.

As a Wings fan, this has been the funnest reg. season in like forever! And Wings are just going to keep getting better and better, so we feel really good!

Interesting theory that the Sens getting a Vezina caliber goalie back from injury will hurt them.

Galaxy brain stuff there, truly.

Ullmark can get in game shape at 4 nations.

lol goals per game scored is 1 goal difference.
So I guess the wings also have a case of anorexia nervosa. (Whatever that is)
Now do goals against per game, wings lose again
Not the 2 flexes you hoped for, instead you end up getting flexed. 🤣

Have you seen the Redwings stats lately under McLellan compared to the rest of the league since he took over:

Red Wings under McLellan

13-4-1, 27 points (tied for first)

3.39 goals per game (fourth)

2.67 goals against per game (14th)

Power play: 35.7 percent (second)

Shots differential: Plus-23 (13th)

They have allowed only nine goals in their past six games (5-0-1).

The stats under McLelllan is what matters moving forward and not what came before. Their 27 points during that span is tied for first in the NHL with Dallas (13-4-1) and Washington (11-2-5).

If you're expecting to get unsustainable elite level goaltending from the likes of Talbot and Lyon for the rest of the season, you might end up a little disappointed.

It is not just the goaltenders that is responsible for keeping the goals down. It takes an entire team effort and a knowledgeable coaching staff with a reliable system to make it work.

The Redwings have a difficult schedule for the rest of the season compared to other playoff contenders to deal with but if they do make it to the playoffs, that experience will pay dividends in the post season making them a difficult out for any Stanley Cup contender.

There are stats that isolate goalie performance from team performance.

During this 5 game win streak Talbot/Lyon have stopped 12.8 more goals against than what was expected given the scoring chances the team gave up.

Could they keep up their elite level play as a tandem and win the Wings a bunch of games down the stretch? It's possible, but I definitely wouldn't expect it.

It is sometimes not the amount of shots stopped that matter but the quality of shots. From all accounts the Redwing defenders have been doing a better job of blocking and reducing most of those quality shots under the new system implemented by McLellan. This was alluded to by the goalies and coaches themselves.

“I think it’s just how cohesive we are as a unit right now -- in the D-zone, in the neutral zone, in the offensive zone,” Talbot told Hockey Night in Canada. “There’s not a whole lot of holes in our game right now. We’re tightening up when we need to, weathering the storm and potting some big goals when we need to. We’re winning a bunch of different ways now, which is a good sign.”

McLellan told media after Saturday’s game: “It’s usually a group effort. Every now and then the goalie just completely steals you one, but I like the way the group is committing to each other.”

So over 18 gp for both teams (since Dec 26th):

StatWingsPlaceSensPlace

GF/Game3.334th2.3330th
GA/Game2.6714th2.334th (tied)
PP%35.72nd22.418th
Shot Diff.+119th+1511th

Lets add one more for good measure: PK%, in which Ottawa is 12th best at 81.5, vs Detroit at 28th with 71.1

Wings take it on Pts, GF/Game, and PP%. Ottawa takes it on GA/game, shot diff and PK%.

I guess the question is, can the wings sustain this under McLellan? I think you think they can, which is fine.

Given your condition that when a coach started with the team is what really matters, since the start of the season the Sens are:

Tied with the wings in GF/GP at 2.83 (over the entire season)

6th best in GA/GP at 2.67 (which the Wings have only sustained under TM, their season average is 3.06)

9th best PP% at 23.4 (behind Wings in 4th @ 27.3)

7th (tied) in Shots for per game at 29.7 (the wings have 29.4 in their last 18)

11th best in shots against per game at 27.3 (wings have 28.2 in their last 18)

The sens numbers through 52 games are pretty great. The wings have only been able to do it for 18 games.
