Yep, a great outing despite the lack of strikeouts. I'll take no walks and a ludicrous number of groundouts any day.

I'd only take it if it was David Price, since it wasn't I'll just complain about that leadoff homerun and how it means Happ is awful.

Burns' numbers in triples are slightly better than Goins' at the same age.

How valid is it to compare batting numbers like that though in baseball?

Last year was Burns's age-24 season and he had a 112 wRC+. Goins reached AAA at 25 and had a 90 wRC+.

That's a lot more than slightly better. The big difference was Burns's ability to put the ball in play.

ah the benefit of low expectations. Happ scrapes through the 6th and coughs up the lead for 3 runs in 6ip against an ST lineup and people are happy.

We all knew he'd faceplant in the 6th there. Because he's Happ.

You almost said that like it matters.

Good one.

If Floyd or Sanchez or Hutchison had that start, you would use it as an example of why they should start instead of him. It was an awesome start. Six innings, five hits, no walks, 14 groundouts.

Seriously, if you see yesterday's start as a negative, then it's gone from a reasonable discussion where everyone disagrees with you to straight up trolling.

6ip, 3er, 2k. With 4 mlbers in the lineup. Obviously not awesome.

floyd, sanchez, and hutch have better spring lines in total than happ had in this start.

Yep, and the groundball rate and lack of hits or walks are all completely irrelevant.

this is what i never really understood. Like i get they went out and paid Happ, however, play the best 5 guys not who makes the most. Idk why its only the 5th starter spot thats open rather than saying we have all spots open you need to earn it. Personally I would rather have Sanchez and Floyd in the rotation than Happ.

Spring training performance doesn't correlate too highly with regular season performance is the problem. Going with Happ IS going with the best option.

Not only would that be a terrible idea on the field. But it would likely also hurt our chances of signing a free agent of any significance.

Jeez, nice throw AJ! :sarcasm: I just tuned in and saw that.

AJ Jimenez just hit Hutch in the back of the head as he was throwing to second to catch a runner stealing. Never saw that before.

Venditte has to pick first, doesn't he? I assume he would pick based on which side he wants the batter hitting from, so it's mostly up to him unless the batter is comfortable not having the platoon advantage.

Yup. Although I have limited viewings of him, the consensus I hear from people is that his stuff has more break from the left side. So If I was a switch hitter and was equally comfortable with either side, then I'd probably want to hit against him as a lefty if he's pitching as a righty. But obviously, it's not up to that batter.

Exactly. All else being equal, Venditte knows he's extremely unlikely to ever have the platoon advantage against a switch-hitter, so it just makes sense for him to go with whichever side he's most comfortable with.

My guess would be that almost every switch-hitter will bat right-handed against Venditte because he'll always choose to pitch left.
