It has been ten years since the Steckel on Crosby hit.

Crappy hit.

As crazy as the numbers Crosby put up, I think there was an even higher level to those numbers that he was just scratching the surface of. Sadly the concussions ruined that , but for my money, he’s a top 5 forward of all time.

Totally forgot that happened tbh

Defining moment of the Sid/Ovi rivalry was the dueling hat tricks in their 2009 series imo

Fun fact: I used to always get Phil Kessel and Dave Steckel mixed up as a kid because they had similar names and were both from Wisconsin

Yeah, I was going to say duel hat tricks likely were above it, but the ripples of this injury would define the rulebook of the next ten years IMO.

Agreed. I don't think we'd have the concussion protocol we have today if that hit didn't happen. Also less tolerance for blindside hits.

EDIT: Damn, Cunningham's Law is blowing up my notifications.

You guys are beyond delusional. Crosby skates and turns directly into him and Steckel tries to avoid contact by moving left. Steckel was also one of the softest players I have ever seen. Blindside hit .... go watch figure skating for gods sake

Will this be the defining moment of the Sid / Ovi generation when we look back historically?

" defining moment of the Sid / Ovi generation when we look back historically?" ??? historically?

WTF are you talking about? It was a dirty hit, then move on... a 10-yr anniversary for an obscure check??... LOL :help:

& 10 years later, people are STILL trying to say it was intentional

How good would Crosby / the Pens have been without this hit?

Do you feel old?

Is the Suter cheap shot on Gretzky the defining moment of that generation? Sure there is historical context (Gretz was never the same after) but injuries shouldn't and dont define generations/eras.

Also FWIW I dont think it changes much for PIT, they still had MAF in net.

This is the first time I have really viewed these replays. It kind of looks to me like Steckel was trying to avoid contact toward the left and it was just an unfortunate collision. I don’t know Steckel well, was he known for hits of this nature?

The Suter hit didn’t happen in 85.

Collision was one thing. But, then Sid getting cleared to play the next game and getting hit by Hedman, made things ever worse. Even a decade ago, concussions were not deemed to be a serious thing.

The Kariya special that CBC did a couple of years ago, they only showed the Stevens hit in the Cup Finals. That was a late hit by today's standards. But, Kariya's concussion issues began with the cross-check by Suter in 1998.

Only silver lining that came out of that was that now hockey is taking hits to the head more seriously. Now they even have spotters to pull guys off the ice.

Hopefully, the horror stories from Franzen, Savard, Pronger, etc. who suffered from years of post concussions symptoms make players acknowledge their symptoms and not hide them from the trainers.

Losing the best player in the league for multiple years led to massive rule changes. If you want to put your head in the sand, you can, but aside from the dueling hat tricks I can’t think of one individual moment in this rivalry that defines what Crosby’s career was all about.

You sure the hit that Crosbys teammate put on another star the year prior that essentially ended his career had nothing to do with the rule changes?

No, because by 1991, Lemieux had passed Gretzky as best player in the game.

I've played hockey at all levels all my life, Steckle did that accidentally on purpose. No doubt.

Oh I am just gonna put my head down and blow up the best player in the world.

If you have accidental contact you react in some way.
lol you mean to tell me you’ve never been run into, gone right through them and kept moving? Because I definitely have, that shit didn’t knock me down and I have a puck to go get, I’m not going to stand around looking at everyone until I’m sure they know it was an accident
