Ohh don’t get me wrong, none of what happened tonight is Martinooks fault I’m not singling out his on ice performance at all. Skill wise the guy is a 4th line player at best and there’s nothing wrong with that, except maybe his salary. But for some reason Rod seems to think because the guy flails himself around the ice 110% every night that that’s somehow a substitute for being an actual good hockey player, it’s not. Goals win hockey games not effort, Jordan Martinook doesn’t score goals.

I agree with you. The problem is that this season is that other than Aho, Svech and Necas, no other forwards are scoring goals.

Jarvis: 2
Martinook, Fast: 1
TT, KK, Staal, Stastny, Noesen, Stepan: 0

We need some of these other guys (TT, KK, Staal and Stastny specifically) to start producing so that there's no incentive to move a 4th liner up.

Islanders played well and we didn’t. I expected a challenging game after the long road trip and Islander style of play. It’s only one loss but warning signals for us are:
—- 3rd and 4th lines are too slow, don’t hit and are not scoring. Has Martinook hit anyone this year and under you have to be kidding he certainly is not a first liner.
—-Little guys like Aho and Jarvis are getting pounded with no retribution.
—Team speed is noticeably slower this year.
—Burns has been worse than TDA defensively
—Goaltending, particularly Freddie is not as good early versus last year
—Stasny past his sale date? I don’t see anything from him yet and reminds me of Domi.
—Coughlin…geez he was awful.

Oh, and NC DOT you suck. 2 years to rebuild a road….geez. Florida just rebuilt roads to barrier beaches in less than a month after Hurricane Ian. Can’t you do a job that doesn’t last multiple years?

Rant out.

I think another issue this far this season is that Slavin has been human. Two goals tonight that he usually makes Norris caliber plays on ended up in the back of the net. Neither one was his fault or anything like that but plays that make you the best defensive defenseman in the game weren’t made and they wound up in the back of the net. Hopefully that’s not a trend and he can go back to making all the plays he has no business making,

I have full confidence they’ll settle in. Slavin and Burns seem a little off but I think they’ll put it together and be a perfectly fine first pair. Pesce and Sjkei looked pretty bad tonight as they seem to do at times throughout the season. And frankly Anderson hasn’t looked all that great to me his last two starts.

I’m not sold on the 3rd pair. Chatfield looks pretty good, Cog hasn’t looked anything like his preseason showing and we all know CDH is going to miss a significant amount of time at some point during the season. I think there’s an upgrade to be had there, preferably some snarl.

Either there was something going on behind the scenes, or Bear was just absolute dog shit in practice to not even get a look. I’m personally glad he’s going somewhere where he’ll at least get some minutes. Something about that whole situation just seemed odd to me, glad it’s done.

I would love to see a KK, Aho swap for a game or two, but I’ve always been a fan of loading the top line up. And as always I’m already questioning some of Rods coaching decisions. I kind of assumed Stastny was brought in to help replace some of Ninos offensive production, he’s going to have a hard time doing that on the 4th line. And there’s no reason to believe that Martinook is suddenly going to become that guy.

Hell when the teams social media manager tweets about Martinook being bumped up to the first line. And he’s got the replies turned off it’s a pretty good indication that everyone except Rod and maybe Daniels thinks its a shit idea. All that said, I’m not worried yet, there’s a ton of hockey left to play. And if the past few seasons have proven anything once you’re in the playoffs anything can happen.

Tonight sucked. But its 1 game, however tomorrow they must win. If the Canes win tomorrow, they will get fame, fortune and cheer. If not, the whole state of North Carolina burns to the ground. Yep, this includes you too Beech Mountain. You may be the highest elevated town east of the Mississippi River but you may not be after tomorrow.

Up to you boys, you want the fame and fortune or do you want Beech Mountain to be no more? Choose wisely.

Nobody thinks Martinook is a top 6 guy, not even our coaches.

5v5:
Last year, Martinook's most common line mates were Stepan and Lorentz and he was 11th among forwards in EV TOI/GP
The year before it was Foegele, Lorentz and Paquette and he was 11th among forwards for EV TOI/GP

That's not top line minutes.

I want to see Martinook on the 4th line, but the fact of the matter is, that's where he's played for the most part. I get the joke is "1st line Martinook", but the reality is over the past 2 years, he's played 113 5v5 minutes with Aho, and 1003 minutes away from Aho.

When he's moved up, it's because a message is being sent to the skilled guys. Work or you won't get ice time and it's always been temporary. That or the team is struggling so they are trying to shake things up. The TOI and line mate show they don't think he's a full time top 6 player.

He's overpaid for what he brings and I'd like to never see him in the top 6, but people are making too much out of the few times he gets there IMO.

Martinook should never be moved into the top 2 lines. The second you do that, you're waiving the white flag on the game.

Of course he shouldn't be, but you are failing to see the forest through the trees. The fact that there are forwards in the top 6/9 that haven't performed is a bigger problem than temporarily moving Martinook up to replace them.

I don't ever want to see Martinook in the top 6, heck, I don't want to see him in the top 9. If our top 6/9 forwards aren't playing to the level they need to be that ends up with Martinook below them, that's the problem.

Just going to keep count of every game where we get a 5-on-3 with the opportunity to tie/win the game and fail to score.

Or what’s the meme? If I had a nickel for everytime [X] happens, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

It was one game at the end of a long road trip, was kinda expected. But it was too easy for islanders, hope Andersen hasnt lost a step, need to fix the def structure and the pp.

This team looks basically like last year vs Rangers, with less skill. We lost 2 decent forwards and did not replace them (since patches is out) with anyone really similar. Keeping one of the two may have made a difference, and that was probably Nino.

We let our best OFD / PPQB go for nothing, and shockingly, the PP got even worse (or is no better, which, when it sucks so bad, is a wash). Burns is not what I was told he was.... (yet?) Hes a f***ing minus 4. I want to like Burns. I am trying to.

We picked up a bunch of washed up dudes on the cheap that, shocker, look washed up and got injured even faster than predicted or have contributed nothing.

We still seem to have no PP coach?

Necas now cares, TT decided not to.

We wasted time screwing around with a press box primadonna malcontent and could have used that 2+ m in FA to put cash toward Nino or TDA.

Call me out all you want but after the first 10% of the season, and yes that's a small number, this team looks worse than last year by a fair margin. We are not winning games against tougher opponents, or ones that are hotter. I am tired of seeing our "window" squandered. I watched this team suck for 10 YEARS like many of you, and the excuses, especially on the PP are f***ing tiring. We've made good moves in recent years and off seasons. I dont think this is going to be one of the,

It’s not Rod’s fault that when he looks down the bench for an infusion of grit/jam on a line, Martinook is the next man up.

That’s a management problem.
With the way our management operates, isn’t it partly Rod’s fault because he is part of this process that evaluates players and needs? Maybe Don is asking in the meetings if we need a bigger guy and Rod is saying no?

They went aggressively after Marchment and Tkachuk this off-season to the point where it was being reported that Marchment was a done deal, so I think management/RBA saw it as a need, but management wasn't able to close a deal on it.

I said this exact same thing last night when the switch was made. By moving him we neuter the Aho line and the game is over. And that's exactly what happened.
