Friedman: Islanders “testing the market” on Dobson

I suspect with Friedman being the one saying the Dobson rumors and now the Zegras rumors that Dobson for Zegras is probably being discussed. Islanders drafting Schaefer means they don't get a Center and unlikely they want to acquire a pick for to draft Hagens at #7 because there is too much risk he could go sooner so then there is local boy Zegras from NY.
Zegras for Dobson really doesn’t make sense even with the positional point of view. Would be redundant with Barzal (who’s a much better player) and I’m taking Barzal if there’s a choice between the two.

Friedman says that "I could see it going either way" with Dobson on the Fan Hockey Show. I'll add the link when it becomes available.

Sounds like a trade is a legit possibility.

If he indeed is asking for 11 millions, trade his ass as fast as you can.

Depends if NYI's intention is to compete or plunge head first into a rebuild/retool.

$11M ain't that hard to swallow for a team that has quite literally nothing else of significant value coming up for an extension in the next 3-4 years. Is he worth $11M right now? Probably not. But that'll be the going rate for a Dobson-like player in 2-3 years, and it's a lot easier to keep the one you have than try to find a new one.

I think Dobson to Buffalo for #9+ and the Islanders drafting Hagens at #9 makes a boatload of sense. McKenzie just had Hagens at #7 in his rankings and Hagen is the exact kind of guy that has historically slid from McKenzie's rankings.

It only takes 1 team to like Hagens enough in the top 8 for this not to happen. if i was a betting man I would say Nashville might be the team to pick him, simply because why the other centers have good things going for them, Hagens to me is the second best behind Misa offensive forward and Nashville needs that bad.

If they want to get a legit top-4 RD to play with Dahlin, they don't really have much of a choice.

Also the cap is going to be like $110 million in just 2 years, having Dahlin, Dobson and Power locked up as your top-3 long term is really good.
It would be good value for Buffalo, but i don't think a 4th high end offensive D man is what they want/need.

I don't think that trade would happen right now, I think that trade would happen at the draft.

Personally if Hagens makes it past Nashville, I'm not sure who I see taking him in the top-10. Philly doesn't make sense after adding Zegras and I feel like Boston goes O'Brien or McQueen over him. Hagens would be pretty redundant on Seattle and Buffalo too, I don't think he makes much sense for them.

I think Nashville and Boston are the only teams in the top-10 that Hagens makes sense to, after that I think he would slide to #11 where the Penguins would pick him. My top-7 right now feels like:

1. Schaefer
2. Misa
3. Frondell
4. Martone
5. Desnoyers
6. Martin
7. O'Brien

I feel like Hagens slides to #8 or later, but I'm not sure who between #8 and #10 will take him. I don't like any of the fits there.

For the sake of argument let's say your top 7 happens. Why would Seattle/Buffalo/Anaheim draft inferior players just because Hagens isnt a "fit?" At that point in the draft youre taking BPA, especially when a top 3-5 prospect drops that far, unless youre really high on someone else. Or you trade the pick

Thinking Hagens falls conveniently to Pittsburgh just seems like wishful homer thinking.
