Is your coach an idiot?

Laviolette is starting to get on my nerves this season. Last season I thought he did a very good job.

This year he's fallen in love with a decent not great prospect (Mancini) who belongs in the AHL as our 6D because he's tall. He's getting caved. We can't move the puck. Zac Jones was supposed to get the 6D role this year, and Lavi won't keep him in the lineup. It's hard to think of any reason other than he's short. It's pathetic and needs to change. And we've had like 4-5 RHD in the lineup basically the full season. Playing dudes at LHD who don't have a clue how to play it. So damn idiotic. An unforced error for no apparent reason.

He's also screwing over Rempe's development. Like I get it if you don't think he's one of our best 12 forwards right now, but stop taking him in and out of the lineup and moving him up and down between NHL and AHL. And when he plays the fact that he gets like only 4-5 minutes per game, yet mediocre at best players like Brodzinski get 10 minutes or whatever, is just ridiculous and has no real logic to it. If you are only going to play him 4-5 minutes a game, you don't think hes good enough to play in the NHL. If so, keep him in the AHL until you think he can play a regular shift. We've wasted like a month already of his season with this stupid shit.

And then of course there's no accountability for Mika. We don't want to hurt his feelings. The forward lines are a lot easier to fix than Lavi's making them out to be. Move Mika down to 3C. Simple. You won't have to keep trying to find the fix next to Mika and Kreids if you move Mika off the line. His fix? Oh yeah, Mika can't score at even strength so we'll saturate him with our two best even strength forwards (Panarin and Lafreniere), and hope they can carry him to being more effective. I'm not optimistic this will change anything. Seems like no accountability for Mika and the team needs to suffer from it. I'd also be open to getting him off PP1 and putting Laf there, but of course that won't even be tried out for one PP by Lavi.

I’m thinking there needs to be a bit of an idiot in every successful coach in pro sports. Can’t be a softy with all the ego driven athletes coaches need to manage. Some are just more of an idiot than others. But really they’re all idiots.

None of us on the habs board think St Louis is an idiot, but it's clear he needs an experienced tactician to help him and he seems stubbornly unable to delegate. (his words)
He's also following in that HC tradition of falling in love with cooked vets by playing Armia on the PP for instance and overplaying Savard and Matheson at the expense of a very young, developing D-corps.
oh he also doesn't know how to use his time-outs or when to pull a goalie who's playing like shit

We don't have to be able to do every aspect of the job better than the coach. But I feel like if you are not stubbornly obsessed with NHL mythology around grittiness and know how to read xGF% you're already ahead of coaches in the NHL in at least some aspects.

Where are you coaching now?

Care to share your latest practice plan from this week?

[mod] I literally said that we won't be able to do some aspects of the coach's job in the post you quoted. But can do others like not play players that get dominated in chances against. Every other league has embraced analytics.

I don’t mind Roy but the Isles do have the epitome of a father coach right now with John Maclean as an assistant.
MacLean was literally the worst head coach in the entire history of hockey, has always been a horrible assistant coach, and probably would be unemployed right now if it weren't for Lou.

Even though he did get several assistant jobs from his buddies between his Devils and Islanders stints with Lou.

He's a complete and utter jackass.

Knoblauch comes across as quite smart to me and often when he makes moves that I doubt, he ends up getting good results. For a rookie coach I knew nothing about at first I've been very impressed.

Like every Oilers coach of this era though, he's started pushing the McDavid Draisaitl button more and more often despite it having diminishing returns and it hurting the team in the long run.

Silver lining of the McDavid injury is that that option isn't there for awhile and they'll have to remember how to win without him. (Or they won't, in which case we're screwed regardless.)
