Coaching is a serious problem.

You'd have to imagine St. Louis is on a bit of a hot seat internally. Hughes and Gorton were constantly talking about being in the mix late in the season and playing meaningful games in March/April, but here we are in early November and it already feels like we're done playing meaningful games.

Hughes and Gorton clearly thought this roster was capable of better results, so if they don't start seeing them then St. Louis will probably be gone before next season.

And how does a coach get his team to show compete and effort if not through usage? If wanting the team to show compete and effort was more important to you then laughing at/criticizing the coach then you would've actually supported Anderson getting that top line opportunity. So as much as you say you want to see that stuff (And I'm sure you do), you just want to hate on MSL more.
Make no mistake I think MSL is in way over his head and will continue to say that. If I recall they have in the past tried Anderson with top 6 players and it has not worked one time.
if the coach can't get his team to show effort and compete then I will call it out.
Based on everything I see this won't end well...

I hope it does but I don't think it will.
We saw the hiring of a rookie coach in 1995 and a rookie GM, neither had experience and it crashed and burned in a few years.
Marty I believe is much smarter than Tremblay but I don't think that will be enough.

I won't hope for Marty to fail, I just am not optimistic.

Nah, he will have most of next season, too.

But all bets are off at that point.

I would imagine that HuGo, like the rest of us, thought that being in the mix relied on Laine being himself again, providing secondary scoring after our first line. His attitude seems to be in the right place after arriving here, so the organization (including MSL) did its job. Him being injured for 3 months before the start derailed this plan. On a young team like us, you could expect a major setback. We just don't have the players to compete night in and night out. Our players are good, but too young. They still need years of reps to become better than average, as a whole. This is a rebuild, and no new coaches will change that.

And you will also call out the coach for doing anything to get the team to show more effort and compete, it's a heads I win, tails you lose situation with you.

My main concern is that most of the guys have looked a lot better not that long ago. I was expecting the youngsters to get even better with time, not worse. Almost everyone seems to struggle.

Oh boy,

Just for your information, criticising some on doesn't mean you hate him

I’ve always felt that’s what vets brought, habits and compete… Whenever an ahl vet gets called up (since I can remember), they usually stand out with work ethic and iq, are on the puck, bring pace, play mature… First time hearing the flip side of it.

Hab good players are super young and vets are meh for sure. Captain is a very good player but is not a guy that sets a fast tempo at least on the ice, I wonder if it’s the same off it. You could tell he was hustling last game.

Sometimes progression is a chart that has wild ups and downs. When we come out of this down, we might spike higher than we ever have before and never dip so low again.

We've got 70ish games left here.

I feel this thread title is a statement/opinion, most treads set the subject… Not that I want to defend the coaching but it could be a coaching thread instead of a “prove me wrong” yes/no thread.

I stated that Anderson has not succeeded in the top 6 all through last year...why try that again? I am not sure why as a fan i can't call out the coach for putting Anderson in the top 6 when it has never worked. But hey, keep thinking MSL is doing a great job....that is your perogative.
I don't think handing the keys to this iconic franchise to a guy with zero experience will end well.

Personally I don’t think MSL job is in danger for the next 2 years and I would fire him yet since this team is not ready to make the playoff yet. The only reason I could see a move is if Jim Montgomery , who is the best French speaking coach in the league, is available.

I'm the optimistic type so I do hope that we spike higher than ever. It's just a stretch of games that is a bit worrisome to say the least. In any case, let's see how it goes the next couple of games.

As a reward for sticking up for his teammates, something you've said you wanted both him and more players on the team to do.

"We know we have to be better in our own zone and keep the puck out of our net," Canadiens executive vice-president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton said at the team's annual golf tourney in Laval on Monday

Montgomery becoming free might be the only thing that changes anything.

Otherwise they'll run MSL until they can't any longer and it's likely if Vincent does good in Laval that they'd give him a chance.

I have no interest in re-treading a Hartley or a Vigneault.

It’s not the same NHL or the same generation of player.

Edm signed Nurse to the deal because McDavid told them to …. that would’ve been unheard of in the past.

Bruins will end up canning a very competent coach simply because Pastrnak & McAvoy are “not really interested in playing for him”

McGuire was saying the other day Vincent told him, his primary mandate since joining the org has been to work with prospects on implementing “MSLs concepts” so prospects have it in place prior to call ups

Yes it makes sense that both teams have the same systems and concepts. It should make the transition easier.

Hartley and Vigneault are retired so good news and I’m sure that’s not the style of coach Kent Hughes would want to bring
