Once his new deal is up, 12m x 8 year deal could have been all that money he potentially pissed away. I rounded up to summarize the convo.Explain? Where are you getting 100m?
Okay assuming the issues after the cup playoffs are not linked whatsoever to playing in those cup playoffsThat isn't how things went down.
The injury occurred due to a cut skate in the bubble and he had surgery (Oct '20). The knee degraded over time and he had another surgery right before the '22 playoffs (Mar '22). It started bothering him again the next training camp so another surgery happened (Oct '22). And we all know the rest - after that failed, he had the big one (Mar '23).
In other words, this wasn't a situation where he made a deal with the devil. If he didn't participate in the 2022 postseason, the only thing that would be different now is he - and the Avalanche - wouldn't have a Stanley Cup.
I am sure the moment he knows he can't make a comeback at all, he will pass it off. Until then, it is his to keep if he and the team believes he can make a comeback, even at 50% effectiveness to what he was beforeSo when is he giving up the C?
His current deal would have him 35/36 (too lazy to stat check exactly lol), so he will only miss out on a few years on the back end of his careerOnce his new deal is up, 12m x 8 year deal could have been all that money he potentially pissed away. I rounded up to summarize the convo.
You are basically asking is 1 cup worth 100m.
The answer is no.
Ok sure. 60m (5 x 12m) if we say the cap is like 120m in 5 years when his contract is up.I am sure the moment he knows he can't make a comeback at all, he will pass it off. You think someone was going to pay him 5 x 12 when he is 36-41? 5 million more than now?Ok sure. 60m (5 x 12m) if we say the cap is like 120m in 5 years when his contract is up.
60m vs 1 cup.
Most are still taking that paycheck.
He would need a contract for July 2029. 12x8 is not happening. A player turning 37, 1 month after the season starts is not getting anywhere near that deal. I think it's foolish to believe that somehow he'd be pain free had he not played in the playoffs. I don't see him being a 37 year old, completely healthy and playing at an elite level. You clearly opened your mouth and typed it out without thinking.Once his new deal is up, 12m x 8 year deal could have been all that money he potentially pissed away. If I already made a decent earning, I may feel differently, but I'm on the other side of that. It sucks as fans because you want your team to have the cap to spend and make the best team possible, but from a players perspective I can't fault any of them for taking as much money as possible. They've played at competitive, high levels all their lives. They train constantly. This is their job. This isn't just a cool moment taking place.I know what it's like to be broke.
Give me the Cup over the money. All day, every day
I think the scenario was if he was fully healthy going into his next deal. The way the cap is heading yeah it's possible...You think someone was going to pay him 5 x 12 when he is 36-41? 5 million more than now?
I don't begrudge any one from earning a living, God bless and more power to them.If I already made a decent earning, I may feel differently, but I'm on the other side of that. And he's not broke as far as I know. He's probably made more than most of us will in 50 years of working.I know what it's like to be broke.

Not a lot of pro athletes that aren't hobbled after 10-15 years of sports. Tiger Woods doesn't even play a contact sport and he is probably in pain every day.Oh in that case then destroy my knees
What Landeskog did was unequivocally not worth it, but I'm a Lightning fan so I might be giving a biased answer.
On a more serious yet somber note though, it was worth it for Peter McNab, who knew he was dying from cancer by the time that postseason ended.

I would bet 90% of pro athletes live with pain every day after they retire its just the level its at. The human body just can't take that kind of punishment and not walk away with pain.
