I think you’d be surprised what docs can do- joint replacement is a thing, it doesn’t get much more advanced beyond “that complex moving part you destroyed? We got you a new one, 3rd party, works pretty well.”

Depends on the person, body part, and how they take care of it though, obviously. Backs are still a bitch, there are still debilitating conditions all over, but with enough money you can hopefully get fixed up pretty good in our “rich first/rich only” system.

Those I know who've had knee surgeries are usually ok for a year or two. After that, they're close to where they were before needing surgery.

I have healthcare insurance when I go to USA and I am not rich. Spend 4 months a year in Florida.

I have waited in Emergency rooms for stitches/medication in USA, UK, Germany, France and Canada.

USA 5 minutes
Germany 5 minutes
UK 5 minutes
France 5 minutes
Canada 6 hours.

People do the same in the US. I've had family members have to wait 6 months to see a cardiologist. And that doesn't guarantee your insurer will pay for any of it. Here most health insurance sucks. They'll deny screens for Cancer as unnecessary on the regular.

I have health insurance and I am not even close to rich. Never had a problem and never waited more than 10 minutes in USA. Spend 4 months out of the year in Florida.

Also lived in Germany its not free it cost me more than USA.

Canada in Niagara banged my head split it open and the triage said 6 hour wait. I went home.

I have my doubts on whether he'll play again or not. That being said medical science has come a long way, so even if he can never play again I can't imagine his quality of life outside of hockey is too bad. Worth it to win a Stanley cup? Debatable. Worth it for how much money he is being paid? 100%

Cool anecdote. Lucky for you. I've had insurance companies tell me a doctor is in network, then have to hear from the doctors office they are not. Just another anecdote, I know. Hell, in Florida, certain large hospitals don't take a particular large insurance company who just lost a CEO.

Same. As much as health insurance companies and hospitals will try repeatedly to double and triple charge for services, some of which were never provided, at least we see our providers and are taken care of. They keep us alive so they can milk more money out of us

Not a lot of pro athletes that aren't hobbled after 10-15 years of sports. Tiger Woods doesn't even play a contact sport and he is probably in pain every day.

This is what so many keyboard snowflakes don’t understand. Most people who play professional sports suffer in retirement from injuries they sustained during their careers. Landeskog is in no way unique in his situation (other than perhaps the tile and getting fully paid on a Long-term contract).

A friend who played in the NFL is in his early 50’s and hobbles around because his knees are wrecked. He knew the risks and took them anyhow because he is an athlete. Another fine who played catcher who never made the bigs is in a similar albeit less severe situation.

People whose highest level of sport achievement was to post on a hockey website will never understand and their opinions belie their ignorance.

And not for nothing, but I had a friend die from cancer around the same time McNab did and my dad died from cancer just two months ago. I meant that comment with the utmost sincerity, I remember reading an article from the Athletic talking about McNab after he passed and mentioning that he hadn't disclosed his condition in June 2022 to the team but knew his cancer was back and that he wasn't gonna beat it that time.

I agree, but the insurance companies need more oversight, they're out of control. I want absolutely nothing to do with universal healthcare. The government just ends up being another crook with a weapon lodged in your back extorting you. It's a real conundrum

Yeah Tiger Woods says he lives in pain every day and he still tries to play golf

I think its a case by case basis. If Tiger can't play golf maybe that isn't living to him.

Some people want to do the thing they love even if there is pain and some NFL players I see retire at 25ish.

I don't think its so much the insurance companies need oversight but they do its the hospitals charging 20 dollars for an aspirin that is absurd.

Thats the difference between the insurance system in Germany and USA. In Germany its not rampant with fraud so they can keep the costs down.

Does he have some kind of rare condition or problem with his leg?? So strange that after all this time he still isn’t any closer to coming back and now sounds a lot like we might never see him again.

The simple truth is what he's trying to come back from is incredibly difficult, if not outright impossible for a sport like hockey.

And yes, his original surgery didn't go wrong per se, but he's had 3 more since. And it wasn't wear and tear, Makar's skate blade cut his kneecap.
