Is there a narrative that the Capitals are sacrificing everything to get Ovechkin the Goal Record? Is there a double standard with regards to Crosby?

Credit's gotta be given when it's due
Real Caps and Ovi fans always knew
Of the flaws in the plus-minus stat
Spent so many hours explaining that
'Bias', people told us for so long
Year after year we were going strong

So the day of reckoning finally came
Uneven playing ground, unfair game
Curious to see how this ended up
Keepin' to ourselves, we had a last laugh
Stay in your place - in the East bottom half!

So start the dialogue, then. What point are you trying to make?

I think if that was Ovechkin in the exact same setting, there'd be way more made out of it and nobody would be saying "well the team is really bad, you have to look at context." It's less directed at 87 and more at the convenient use and non-use of plus minus when people feel like it.

For the record I don't even dislike Crosby and think he is the best player of their generation, with Ovechkin No. 2.

The Pens now exist to keep Sid’s points per game streak going.

Yeah, I don't think anyone cares about that in comparison to all-time goals.

Have to take back what I said about Washington back though. They definitely found a way to win. Very impressive. Strome with a career year, Protas (who?) emerging, and PLD coming back from the dead. Never would have called that one.

Pens are really not that good and Crosby's +/- took a hit in the second half last season.

Getting older doesn't help either.

Quite the hot take. Ovechkin is still a key contributor in the caps, it's not like the sole reason he still has a job is because of his chase for the goal record.

I could see the argument that Gretzky was a better complete player than Ovechkin. I might even be inclined to agree.

I don’t think it’s much of a question that Ovechkin is a better goal scorer than Gretzky though.

(before everyone gets angry, I am simply using this to point out that plus minus is a highly flawed stat)

Being on a bad team really shows why it’s such a bad stat. He’s only -3 at 5v5 (due to a .878 on-ice SV% mostly), but -13 in empty net situations. Bad teams pull the goalie a ton these days and their star players get a bunch of minuses from it. We never used to see this many empty net goals

Haven't really watched them much this year. I think he took several two or three minute long shifts.

Never really seen that before but the shot is still terrifying

Man, we now got Caps fans going back through old threads laughing at comments made half a year ago.

Some people have way too much time on their hands.

the best way to get Ovi the record is for the team to be good and the best way for the team to be good is for Ovi to score (and thus hit the record).
Wow, the guy who posted this all the way back in October must really know what he's talking about!

He's playing the least amount of minutes per game in his career and is No. 1 in the NHL is goals per/60 and even-strength goals per 60 and is top 6 in points/60 so do not try to spin this as "well he's just staying on the ice a lot and that's why he's scoring"
