Is there a narrative that the Capitals are sacrificing everything to get Ovechkin the Goal Record? Is there a double standard with regards to Crosby?

The Caps can do whatever they want to please their fan base. If that is going all out for OV's goal record? Power to them. This is not a shot at Crosby. Crosby record stand on its own. I've never understood the hate between Crosby and OV fans. Why can we not celebrate that two of the all time top 10 players in history played in the same era?
It's actually one way hate. Ovi fans don't care about Sid, but Sid fans jump with hate into Ovi threads with funny narrarives that 'Capitals are just trying to help Ovi to beat Gretzky's record sacrifising the team sucess , when they need to trade Ovi and rebuild'.
But Capitals are on top of Eastern Conference & Ovi leading the league in goals with 15 in 18, has a plus-minus of +15. Meanwhile Penguins are struggling to get to the playoffs spot. If anything it's Penguins need rebuild asap, not the Capitals.

I don't see any problem. While Penguins are struggling to get to the playoff spot with Crosby. According to their logic Penguins need to trade Sid & rebuild.
