Funny to think we may be further along with the rebuild if we kept Kovacevic, Allen, Romanov , drafted Leonard/Michkov and saved the Laine contract for the FA market. I didn't mind the Laine trade at the time, risk/reward was worth what we gave up, so I can't fault mgmnt on that one.

Well not funny in a 'haha' way, but a sad 'ironic' way. 1 step forward, 2 back?

Starting next season:

Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
Demidov - XXXXXXX - Laine

We need a real proven brand name 2nd line center acquired via trade.

Hutson - XXXXXX
Guhle - Carrier
Xhekaj - Reinbacher/Mailloux

We need a real proven brand name top line defensive partner for Hutson acquired via trade.

If they can make these 2 moves we will be a serious cup contender.

I would like to try Dach as our 3C next season

Suzuki
XXXXX
Dach
Beck
If I'm HuGo I'm offering a blank check to Rasmus Andersson (if he makes it to free agency, of course).

Are you popping gummies again???
The fact gummies were popped or not is immaterial. I stand by the statement. Bossy will be Demidov, Trottier will be Caufield, Suzuki and others by Commitee. Slafkovsky will be Gillies and Hutson will be Potvin. These players will grow into those roles. They are still green. The problem is our supporting cast stinks. It pales in comparison to Butch Goring, Nystrom, Tonelli, Langevin, Sutters, Morrow, etc… And obviously Billy Smith is still to be determined.

I disagree. Dach has been producing about as expected since late December and that would only improve with Demidov coming up.

The guy I'm not sure about on the 2nd is Laine. If he can regain his form then great. But right now I don't see it.

I don't see us moving towards a big name RD. I think Reinbacher will come in and he'll gradually take that role. I can see us getting another Carrier/Savard type for depth (if Savard is moved at the deadline.)
Who would be the other top-4 D? I don't think that Carrier, ideally, is a long term solution for the top-4, even if he can do okay alongside Guhle, as we have seen when he first arrived.

I also don't think that another depth addition would solve that need.

I'd rather have Mailloux with Xhekaj as a 3rd pairing D with upside than a depth D acquired in the meantime.

But, at the same time, I don't think that we need a BIG NAME RHD addition for the top-4 if we end up playing Reinbacher with Guhle as a shutdown pair with offensive upside.

We'd need a physical D that is mobile, plays solid defense and can at least make a good first pass to play with Hutson, but he would not need top be a 1st pairing D or, even a solid #3. He could be a genuine #4 D that complements Hutson's skill set.

An Alexander Romanov type of D, only as a righty.

Maybe even a Kovacevic type, if we had kept him? His hard shot could have come in handy as another target for Hutson's playmaking.
