Is the Bruins loss the biggest choke job ever?

The Bruins had everything they needed to win the cup:

*Selke center
*60 g scorer
*Vezina Goalie
*Jack Adams coach
*Divers to draw penalties
*toughness.
*veteran leadership
*a rat

But they lacked heart. Biggest choke bar none.

I'm not sure if I'd call it 'heart', but there was something missing from that group.

Leafs winning one playoff series in twenty years and zero cups in almost sixty is much more of an overall choke job than the 16 playoff series wins and a Stanley Cup win the Bruins have since the Leafs had last won a playoff series. Leaf fans are delusional

Leafs are just plain mediocre. Thats the reality.

Make no mistake the history making Bruins choked this series in orders of magnitude greater than any team before.

65 wins.

Up 3-1 in series.

At home up in 3rd period with one minute to go.

Lose in first round.

Only thing that seems similar is Red Sox overcoming yankees down 3-0 - but even then, it’s not like how this series turned out.

Bruins had most points ever. Florida battled its way in final days.

Wow.

It is Boston but not this one. The one against Philly is the biggest.

Yes. Enjoy the record. We are all too happy to let you have it

We're not going to let y'all forget that easy. ;)

Was changing the goalie in game 7 the right thing to do? Was Ullmark that bad?
He was that badly injured, apparently.

It's not really a "choke" if you never had a lead so this is definitely worse than 2019 Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay started off by going up 3-0 in period 1 of game 1. So it kind of depends on where and how you draw the line.

Incidentally, the main topic here is going to be very subjective because "choking" isn't very well defined. It's going to depend a lot on what all y'all think the prerequisites are. But because I'm a Jackets fan and am contractually obligated to shill for my team, I'd like to also add a reminder that the 2019 Lightning-Jackets game not only was the first ever sweep of a President's Trophy winner, but that was also the first time our team had ever won a playoff series. Ever. At any time in franchise history.

Discuss! ;)

I've had some time to think about it, and I think we give the #1 Worst Choke Ever award to these 2022/23 Boston Bruins.

Bruins Nation, stand up and take a bow. Impressive!

I'd rather choke to Florida than to the Leafs if that's any consolation lol. I just find it hilarious the amount of Leaf fans running their mouths today. I'd much rather trade our first round choke this season for what the Bruins have done in the last twenty years compared to the Leafs.

I would say being the best regular season team in history, while giving up multiple 3rd period leads and a 3-1 overall series lead is a bigger choke.

It was crazy how many opportunities Boston had to finish this series off but wilted in the moment.
That does kind of make one wonder, though - are we talking about the biggest overall choke, or the biggest series of choke moments leading to a dramatic choke result?

Its up there, but the Bruins were one of the luckiest teams in the modern era. They were a legit contender and one of the best teams in the NHL, but they weren't best team in the modern era good.

The problem is that Tampa deserves to be ridiculed for how badly they lost to the Jackets but everyone's forgotten it because they went to 3 straight Finals and won it twice. They recovered from their embarrassment as well as you possibly can

True enough. We have to wait a couple years to know how Boston does for that to be a fair comparison, tho.

I mean, yes, it might seem inevitable that they're screwed now, but two weeks ago it seemed inevitable they would at least make the second round.

I would take the Bruins record too.

But don’t deflect from the reality that this is likely the biggest choke job in the history of the NHL.

I'll keep saying until I'm blue in the face:

Leafs have been embarrassing for a lonnnng time; but if you're an O6 team and have less cups than them...who really is more embarrassing? The Leafs coulda left the league in 67 and still be 2nd in banners with 60 years for teams to catch up.

One of for sure. The magnitude of a choke isn't always because of the difference in points in the standings though. . There have been lots of chokes recently that were pretty epic. Vegas being up 3-1 in the series and 3-0 in game 7 and losing to SJ was bad. Even the Leafs in 2013 looking like they'd finally get over that hump and choking away a three goal lead with 10 mins left in the game was pretty monumental and probably a bigger loss for that team than this year's Bruins.
