if that's what he meant to say it's even more baffling. for that to be the case i see only two explanations: either he was told to take responsibility but he doesn't feel responsible so he offered this as malicious compliance; or management is genuinely blind to his poor play and their vote of confidence emboldened him to give us this half-hearted and back-handed mea culpa.

When your bank account & your agent both say you're elite you start to believe it if you're not naturally humbled, it's no shock he feels most of his troubles are related to how bad the team is.

I could certainly be wrong, but let’s also keep in mind he’s actively avoided the media for how long now? He absolutely used that word and phrasing intentionally, you’ll never convince me otherwise.

Guy is a bratty spoiled loser who was blessed with genetics and a professional athlete as a father.

if i was a former fourth overall pick among the seven highest paid defensemen in the nhl, and i was being outplayed by louis crevier, i'd like to think i'd have the humility to admit i needed to do better without qualification. of course, i wouldn't be me then, but whatever.

Yeah...

When all the folks who were against the trade from day 1 gave reasons, myself included, it was a myriad of things.

But no one I can recall actually said "watch in a few years he'll be outplayed by home grown guys and trade bait."

"Supposedly..."

Would he really waive his NMC? I can't imagine anyone would even want him at that cap hit
they would have to retain for sure. doubt they get much for the trouble. what a horrific contract man. it might not be quite as damaging as the last seabrook contract, but good lord going from getting rid of that contract to this jones extension within a year is just eye watering.

SJ isn't doing himself any favors if he doesn't recommit to playing his best because it is conceivable that Rinzel comes out ready to play and Lev has another step function in his development next season so that there is literally no rd slot for him. I think management doesn't mind this coming to a head now and not at the beginning of next season. Who wants an ugly divorce in training camp? Time waits for no man.

He's been pissy for awhile being on a rebuilding team and now the fans are booing him. So yeah, I think he'd be open to being moved.

Just a question of how many teams he'd be open to moving to and how much we'd retain or get back in such a deal.

Thankfully, as bad as he's been recently, he's still a RHD with size. Basically a unicorn in the NHL. GMs covet players like him. And the Dubois and Trouba trades give me confidence he can be moved if he's willing to waive to enough teams.

Edit: And he's over a half a point per game on the worst team in the league. Some idiot GM is gonna look at him and think "if we trade for him, he can be a 60pt RHD for us and he doesn't cost shit to acquire".

Five more years at $9.5M. Who is going to take that on? Certainly none of the teams that have played the Hawks this season, and watched him play.

At $9.5m? Nobody.

But I think options start opening up if we retain $2m per. It'd hurt like hell, but you can ice a good team with that much dead cap. Minny is managing fine right now, and their dead cap this season is nearly $15m, it'll drop to $1.66 starting next season.

Outside of retaining cap, could always take back a different cap dump with less term, similar to what LA did by taking back Darcy Kuemper in the Dubois trade.

Not saying it can happen, just that it could. Again, GMs salivate over RHDs with size.

Option 1 probably take whatever the other team's most overpaid forward without retaining, hopefully shorter term than Jones but certainly not for anyone with longer

Option 2 is if you do retain $2.0-$2.5 million, get something positive out of it

Don't think the Hawks need to retain $2.0-$2.5 million just for a straight dump. The risk is Jones diminishes his value further and you missed a chance to get out, but there is also a chance he plays better. The only thing really forcing the issue is all the Hawks young Defensemen but that's not full on hand being forced yet. Only Defensemen needing new contracts are Kaiser and Crevier who can be re-signed for cheap 1-way deals for a year or two. Martinez expires.. Phillips could technically be retained but probably won't. It's the following offseason with Korchinski, Allan and Del Mastro all with expiring ELCs where there's more decisions at play.

It really feels like the winds of change are blowing.

Chicago media is maybe the softest in the league. They don’t criticize anyone, and that’s probably because everyone is connected to the organization. They don’t want to rock the boat and risk being blacklisted.

So the fact that the media is quickly turning on Jones, likely means the organization is as well. They forced him to answer today, when he hasn’t in months. It’s hard to envision him on the team next year, whatever that trade may look like.

That -4 game was historically bad.

Most players might see that as a wake up call and try to step it up but I dont think Jones does. In his head it is just the team playing bad and not him individually.

Which is why he is worthless and they need to dump him ASAP. Id IR him for the short term and give the minutes to the young dmen and still scratch Brodie,

What about Jaspari kotkotami. He is a 30 pt bottom 6 center at 4.85 for 5 more years after this one? He has some size. Is not a great skater 50% faceoffs. For jones? Would u retain $2-$3 for the next 5.25? It would massively increase the return.

Dylan cozens For Seth jones 25% retained?

Don’t think Jones would waive for Buffalo.

Carolina would be a pretty good fit. Orlov and Burns are expiring and they do genuinely need someone on the right side that can play big minutes. Kotka is way overpaid for them but has an outside chance of finding a better gear with more opportunity. With a good team, good weather and tax friendly, I think Jones would waive there for sure.

For JK with no retention, sure. And I could see them and Jones both having some level of interest.

Don't think we'd be getting Cozens back for him (even with retention). Also don't think he'd ever waive for Buffalo.
