Is Rasmus Dahlin an idiot?

Saw the third period of the Habs-Sabres today. I am high on the Sabres and after a bad start they appear to be turning things around. Dahlin scored in the third to put them ahead, if I remember correctly, but then took a completely selfish, completely unnecessary, completely ill-timed elbowing penalty which resulted in Montreal going ahead. Then with the extra attacker out he tried to corral the puck at the blue line and instead missed it completely-by a foot......I couldn't believe what I was seeing.....it was a weak backhanded swipe that had him turn away from the puck and the 2 Canadiens went right past him, one with the puck and one without to salt the game away. Dahlin tried to chase them but fell down.

For those who watch Dahlin play regularly, what the hell was that and what kind of captain with at least a quarter of a brain takes a penalty like that?

Please....discuss.

I have no idea what that little swipe at the puck when the goalie was pulled was. That was odd

I still have the THN draft issue with his face and generational defenseman as caption on the cover. Where Quinn Hughes was barely in top 10.
Chill. I too can't believe how lucky we are to have Hughes but we don't need to be smug and insert it unnecessarily into unrelated threads.

Dahlin' been completely unsupported by veterans or useful systems, so it's possible he's adopted some terrible habits.

But he's still a superlatively skilled player. Either in Buffalo, or if they stupidly trade him elsewhere, he will be a key part of some long playoff runs eventually.

The thing is Dahlin's IQ will probably never come close to Hughes. This isn't to say he's dumb, far from it. But Hughes is a genius, while Dahlin is just smart. He has a better shot and raw physical tools though, so with better support could very well be elite.

Would love to see how Hughes would look if he had to play the first 6 seasons of his career with the single worst most toxic organization in the history of the sport. Did you know that when he stepped on the ice for our regular season opener it was the first time in his entire career he played a game under an actual credible NHL quality coach?

Yep. People immediately assume a player’s development trajectory will be the same regardless of environment. We had cokeheads and drunken morons leading the team when he was drafted, and the franchise is irreparably broken by ownership.

Dahlin has incredible skill, but being forced to play 30 minutes of ice time with some of the dumbest hockey players on the planet has to wear on a guy. He may be broken now, he may not. We’ll see.

If he is broken, we at least have another 1st overall Dman who is 6’6”. He is good at transition and passively waving a stick near players in the crease while being horribly out of position.

I have been saying this for YEARS.
Dahlin is one of the most irresponsible and absent-minded dman I've ever seen receive significant ice time. Guy is a disaster against the forecheck, and he very frequently ends up on his ass when scrambles after realizing that he's 10 feet out of position.

Quick research shows you’ve been saying this since 18? Yeah 18 months ago. So not even two full years lol

Exactly, dude is terribly overrated by people who just looks highlights and remember that draft hype. But I guess I'm biased or something according to his fans

When was the last time a team full of kids did anything? Buffalo has zero vets and have arrogantly held onto their prospect pool thinking they can be different. Maybe it’s an overcorrection from Eichel, who knows. But the fact they haven’t acquired a real veteran RHD, among other things, is inexcusable. Dahlin will have his moment

I can't believe how over hyped Dahlin was leading up to his draft. It's like one person called him "The McDavid of defensemen" and everyone just went along with it without actually watching him.

I don't think he was overrated leading up to the draft. Defensemen scoring at 0.5 PPG in the SHL isn't something that usually happens, like, ever. I saw him play, live even, and have never been more impressed by a 17 year old defenseman in the league. He would rush the puck up the ice like no one else at that age.

But I do think he has become overrated after. I've heard him being called Sweden's best defenseman for a couple of years now. Personally, I think he has to clean up his mistakes before he surpasses Hedman or Forsling, and a case could be made for a couple of others as well. Rasmus Andersson for one.

Exactly... in fact, I would strongly consider trading pretty much anyone else on our roster for him.
Outside of Hughes.
