Is Ottawa good?

These are the results two years removed from officially declaring "The rebuild is done!".

Sabres and Red Wings, both rebuilding teams, have surpassed the official "rebuild is done" franchise in the Atlantic.
You are dreaming, all 3 are spinning their wheels and Ottawa is at least the most recent playoff team amongst them

"The rebuild is done". Shouldn't OTT be up there with Devils? Instead, they are a mind-numbing 1pt below rebuilding teams in the standings. Eeek. Stark contrast!

Why are you referencing the disgraced fired GM?
I don’t think you’ll find any Sens fans who thought we’d be up with the devils this year.
Everyone was pretty much I think we’re a wild card team.

Did the new GM correct the comment? I can't seem to find anything. Didn't Steve Staios just trade assets to sign an overpaid crippling contract? Or is he also a disgrace now?

That's not a move a "rebuilding team" makes. That's a move by poorly ran management (GM) regardless if the "rebuild is done!" or not. Is there information that Ottawa is starting another rebuild chapter? Seems endless.

The new GM, Steve Staios, came in and set the franchise back with one stroke of the pen. Ouch!

I honestly pity the OTT fans, and that is coming from a DRWs fan. Lol.

What the hell are you talking about? What stroke of the pen? He acquired Ullmark for peanuts and signed him. Is that what you're talking about?

I mean...all 3 of them are the 3 longest active droughts in the NHL...nothing to really brag about in that argument for anyone.
Is saying they're all spinning their wheels bragging to you?

Give it up [mod], the Wings are the next Sabres, the Yzerplan has gone completely off the rails and Lalonde is about to get fired

He acquired him for peanuts, yes. He signed him to a 4 year contract at market value for a Vezina winning goalie. He has yet to reach his potential here - which sucks, I'll admit.

Korpisalo was horrible here. We were prepared to eat much more than 1 million a year, I guarantee that.

Why, what makes Detroit so amazing? Copp making 5.6 million for 8 points? Tarasenko making 4.75 for his 8 points? Compher making over 5 million for his 7 points? Rasmussen making over 3 million dollars for his 6 points? It keeps getting worse indeed. If Talbot falters even for one second, you're dead.

Is Ullmark struggling or is he playing to his capability's behind a team like Ottawa? Korpisalo looks good on Bruins. Wonder why is that is?

I CANNOT believe OTT gave up young assists AND retained 1m for a statistically better goalie this season. That's terrible asset management, and as a cherry on top, Staios signs an even worse contract! It's just insanity!

Help me understand. Two years ago GM came out and said "rebuild is officially over". Gets fired, new GM shows up and never says rebuild is NOT over... but instead trades young assets, signs a crippling contract while still having very little draft capital and one of the worse prospect pools in the league...

But then OTT fans can't say rebuild isn't over, yet GM is making moves like it is over? Make it make sense!

At this point, OTT should be up there with the Devils. Staios and ownership have terrible communication. Give their fans something. They don't even know what the hell is going on!

This early into the season, it can be tempting to look at the conference standings and think that points percentage tells the whole story. If that's the case, Ottawa has five teams to leapfrog to sit in the final wildcard spot.

I tend to think goal differential tells a more compelling story, and is more of a lead indicator of regular season success. Over the last two seasons, all top 8 teams in both conferences in goal differential made the playoffs in three of four instances. The Capitals and Islanders last year were the anomalies with negative goal differentials while qualifying. So it's usually a pretty clean way of analyzing how the standings will sort out in the long run.

With Boston in third place in the division, holding onto a -18 goal differential, history would suggest that they are highly likely to fall down the standings if they continue to play at that level game in and game out.

Ottawa's goal differential is -1. That has them at 9th in the conference. All this to say, it's a long season, and their play has them in the race.

Are they good? Their starting goaltender has been bad. History would suggest he individually is due for an uptick in performance, although the Senators' defensive play has a tendency to make most good goalies play poorly. So who knows. Meanwhile, their power play is excellent - fourth in the league. In sum, I don't know if they're good, but with their goal differential hovering around even, they aren't bad.

He acquired a goalie that's not even in the same stratosphere as the one he let go. Korpisalo has better numbers this year? Great, I never wanted to see him play in Ottawa again. Ullmark not doing it yet? I'll wait, because he's show over the course of his career that he can do it.

What is it you want to know? Like, seriously? He gave up a late 1st and a 4th liner that Ottawa had soured on for one of the best available goalies in the league and then signed him. It's not working right now? So be it, I'd do that trade a thousand times over again.

Nevermind this rebuild is over or not over rubbish. It's over when the team makes the playoffs. Same goes for Detroit.

EDIT: It's the same reason Yzerman dumped all that money into Copp, Compher, Rasmussen, Tarasenko etc. You try to improve and sometimes you take you shot and miss.

For your information, both Boston goalies from last year are playing worse than both Ottawa goalies from last year. I WONDER WHY?!?!?!

Why are you so obsessed with that? The dude isn't the GM anymore. It's literally just marketing, lol, for themselves and for the ticket sales if a GM says "hey give me like 10 more years, we're building.. something I promise" or if they say "hey everyone, we got a squad now, great job me".

No OTT shouldn't be up there with the Devils because the Devils didn't have Melnyk and Dorion running things. The two franchises couldn't have been run any different.

He essentially is paying a past his prime goalie nearly $10m per for the next 4 years when you account for the Korpisalo retention. No matter how you slice it.....That.Is.Brutal!

You pointed out Detroit's placeholders. Is Ullmark supposed to be a $10m placeholder?

The next question is how long until Staios is fired? He already set the team back at least 4 or 5 years.

Lol. Then proceeds to trade assets, retains $4m salary and signs an aging past his prime goalie to $8.3 for the next 4 years. LMAO- You can't make this shit up!!!!

Meanwhile still one of the worse prospect pools in the league and very little draft capital. Shouldn't they be focusing on fixing that?

Certainly you're not daft enough to believe 7+ years of shit can be undone in one season, so you're obviously only in here to stir shit up.

They got a "good team" win last night.

From what the team 1200 dudes were saying the sens just completely f***ing sucked and got absolutely dominated by the Sharks, but the Sens walked away with a regulation victory.

I believe they said the Sens only got 1 shot in the 3rd and that was the game winning goal.

Given the shot disparity Ullmark had to be good and he was.

Could be a game where the team realizes something, or at the very least Ullmark gets into a grove and plays better consistently for the sens.

Or it's just a game they got lucky to win, but we'll see Saturday as LA is a great team, but they're not a bad team.

Seems it could much worse for Ottawa to have some Detroit fans. Having schadenfreude while your team is trash is just unbelievably stupid.

I really thought Ottawa had a team that was going to get to playoffs at least. It's unfortunate how things have played out. They can still make it, but I do wonder about the culture.

Past his prime lol? [mod] Sure, Ullmark can be our placeholder, you have fun with your 18 million dollars in placeholding.
