Is McPhee the Worst Trading GM of the Decade?

It's not only McPhee's fault, he has his Pro Scouts, but the additional picks and the contract for Pacioretty should be McPhee's mistake alone.

There is much more than this.
Vegas drafted Pulkkinen who plays in Europe instead of taking Domingue. Domingue in Tampa has better stats than any other Vegas goalie.
Since June 2017 Vegas couldn't get a better backup than Subban. Last season Vegas was #31 in EVsave% without Fleury and still they didn't feel the need to improve the backup position. So far this season Subban is .872 EVsave%.
On top of that Fleury got a 7M contract extension when it wasn't needed.

People who are responsible for this should not continue. Can't have Pro Scouting and Goalie Departments failing multiple times. That's McPhee's job, to find a better staff. If McPhee can't do that then he should be considered among the worst.

He ripped off many teams landing players like Karlsson, Smith, Marchessault essentially for free, including many more trade for picks and players, such as the one with the jets, receiving the 13OA pick (Suzuki) in exchange not to select Perrault from them.

But failed to draft Valimaki.

But failed to draft Valimaki.
Suzuki is no slouch, Glass is currently one of the top scorers in the WHL, Brannstrom is one point under a PPG in the AHL and has looked like a future stud in every appearance with Vegas, then Hague looks like a solid bet to be a top 4 big defenseman with a booming slapshot.

I think he can sleep easy that he didn't take a chance on Valimaki. Unless all four guys bust which seems unlikely.

It's chia. All he had to do was ride the wave and he f***ed it up. He had McDavid draisitl Hall Nuge as his forward group and had to only draft one of Barzal or Chabot with his first. Instead he traded the first for a bust defensemen and traded hall for a #4 defensemen and gave Lucic a horrible contract. Edmonton could have been a dynasty. Just my opinion

Moved back 10 slots, and still got a guy they really wanted, cant say Jets did bad, I said it was a win win for both
yeah Ves is a beast but at that time it looked kinda foolish. But gladly for the Jets they got an amazing prospect.

But failed to draft Valimaki.
Suzuki will be better. And I wouldnt sweat over Valimaki when better prospects were still on board like Vesailainen, Jokiharju and Tolvanen. And the jury is still out on many prospects mainly Thomas, Chytil, Poehling, Frost, Timmins, and Heponiemi.
So yeah before making it seem like Valimaki was the BPA at 13OA, think again.

Was just revisiting his more recent trades. Obviously you have the Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat fumble from 5 or 6 years ago, but let's look at more recently.

February 26th, 2018 - McPhee acquires Tomas Tatar from Detroit for Vegas' 2018 1st, (Joe Veleno) Islanders' 2019 2nd, (Currently #52) and a 2021 3rd.

Tatar has a dismal showing with Vegas, only putting up 5 goals and 3 assists in 28 games, and was a healthy scratch during much of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Joe Veleno fell into Detroit's laps from his projected 14th spot. He plays a game so well-rounded that many Detroit fans wanted him to stick with the team into the regular season, despite his offensive game needing some work.

September 10th, 2018 - McPhee acquires Max Pacioretty from Montreal for Tomas Tatar, Nick Suzuki, and Vegas' 2019 2nd. (Currently #33)

Tatar currently has 9 goals and 8 assists in 20 games with Montreal, compared to MaxPac's 2 goals and 2 assists in 16 games. Suzuki also appears to be a very promising prospect, and is just outside the top 5 in OHL scoring.

So essentially over the course of six months, McPhee acquired MaxPac (Currently at a 21 point pace in the highest offensive season since 05/06) for the following:

Nick Suzuki
Joe Veleno
Two 2019 2nd round picks (Currently #33 and #52)
2021 3rd

Obviously he's nowhere near the Mike Milbury/Islanders territory of bad, but the only guy I can think of in this decade with multiple horrible trades like that is Chiarelli... And even he got high level draft picks back when he was selling away star players. (Minus Taylor Hall)

Found Chia’s burner account

I know time travel will never be a possibility because a oiler fan hasn't come back from the future to kill baby chia erasing him as oilers gm from this timeline.

Edit: just Incase it does become possible I implore oiler fans not to do away with him until after 2011. I don't want to live in s world where Vancouver won that cup.

No, not the same ****. But yes, was a good move by McPhee
Well the reason I assumed it was for Perrault cuz at that time he was clearly the player they would have picked. But is also protects the other 2.
But regardless it was a great move at the time.

It's definitely Chia. Those trades in OP are BRUTAL but he does have many positives trades as well. Chia has never had a significant trade win.

the Forsberg deal gets rightfully mocked but people always forget how he got him in the first place

trading Varlamov for the 11th overall+a 2nd rounder was a very good trade

anyways he's bad but Chiarelli's definitely worse

I think Chia and Dorian are worse but McPhee is definitely a horrible GM, especially when it comes to contracts.

Anyone trying to justify or explain away the awfulness of the Forsberg trade is nuts. Erat scored all of two goals for the Capitals. Two!

And the worst part is, it was completely obvious that it was an awful trade right from the start. This wasn't a scenario where we look back years later with hindsight and condemn a trade that didn't work out, it was clearly terrible from the moment it happened. SMH.
