Is McPhee the Worst Trading GM of the Decade?

Suzuki will be better. And I wouldnt sweat over Valimaki when better prospects were still on board like Vesailainen, Jokiharju and Tolvanen. And the jury is still out on many prospects mainly Thomas, Chytil, Poehling, Frost, Timmins, and Heponiemi.
So yeah before making it seem like Valimaki was the BPA at 13OA, think again.

The difference is I wanted Valimaki before the draft and not Suzuki. Nobody would have traded Suzuki if he is great. Vegas had enough time to work with him and decided to get rid of him.

Any Oilers fan will tell you Chiarelli has set the team back years and that McDavid is wasting away having to do everything himself because he has no help. It's still insane how he's won 2 scoring titles despite having to do it all. Imagine if he had help. :(

lmao. So Forsberg wasnt great? And no good prospects who got traded were great? What about Sergechev? I can come up with a big list of prospects burning their former team but is that what you really think? Since he got traded, he isnt anything good?

Vegas felt there were getting a game breaking goal scorer in Pacioretty. Suzuki was the most difficult piece for them to let go of in that deal, but a price they felt they were willing to pay for a player they coveted. They didn’t just toss in Suzuki because they didn’t value him. The contrary is actually the case.

I mean... You're talking about the guy who traded Filip Forsberg.

I dont know..

He obviously was on track with Tatar as he has blasted out in Montreal. It just didnt work in Vegas. They were on the roll and he felt he can do the finishing touch with a scoring winger. They almost got there, and if Tatar would have been the player for Vegas that he is now few months later for Habs, maybe its done.

Trading him out though was too early by the looks of it, as he did have faith in Tatar enough to overpay for him in the first place, so have some patience, man. But I understand the want for Pacioretty too. Seeing close when his assistant GM won the cup with the core he couldnt might have made him a little restless. And adding couple good veteran goal scoring guys in Stastny and Pacioretty didnt feel like a bad idea for me either.

Pacioretty can still turn it around too.

Forsberg for Erat is the classic. Yes, it is terrible deal. More so in hindsight, but got to admit it wasnt good to start with. But need to understand the context too. Caps was "losing their window" and McPhee was losing his job. Something needed to be done and he had been sitting out on the trade-switch long enough.

Erat came from defensive system team, was regular 50 point winger praised by his two-way play. Everyone and their mom would have agreed that kind of player was what Caps needed back then. There was questions of Erat declining, but McPhee took the risk and I dont really want to blame him on that, since I myself was one of those who were calling him out on not taking risks all those years before this happened. Also Erat was badly mis-used here, so he propably even wasnt as bad of a player as he looked.

Forsberg was a good promising talent, but its not like everyone knew he would be scoring 30-40 on a regular basis. Now of course he exploded right after moving to NA, but that wasnt really a 'sure thing' either. He didnt do anything really outstanding before that and judging on all his grievy comments his still targeting at Caps whenever he has the possibility, there might had been some stuff going behind the curtains aswell? He did also fell down few spots in the draft.? Did they see some alarming signals?

Latta was in the mix too, young heart and soul guy who did have some upside in him aswell. Well, he didnt find that upside eventually so its a double-bite in the ass, but these sort of things happens. Many however thought that Latta would turn out as a very useful 3-4 line center for years to come.

Atleast one positive sound from the rumour mill is that McPhee favoured Wilson over Forsberg to get Erat. Sounds maybe crazy, but Im happy he did. Wilson was a key piece on winning the cup last year. Could we have won the cup earlier on if we had them both? Maybe. We could also not won it at all, as maybe McLellan doesnt get us Oshie if we still have Forsberg. Oshie was another key piece on winning. Or maybe Forsberg doesnt even break out this way if he is still a Cap. Everything worked out for us eventually so I think its time to let it go.

So.. Making one bad trade? That happens. Best way to not make mistakes is to do nothing. And that was the bigger problem on his time around DC.

As a Caps fan, what I rather call McPhee out for is the trades he didnt do and the UFA's he didnt sign. The mistakes he was scared to do. He never had the heart to do big trades or commit to big UFAs to get us over the edge. He signed newbie coaches and expected them to win the cup with a core that didnt have enough support or leadership around them. Thats on him.

Dont focus on just the negatives dude. He ripped off many teams landing players like Karlsson, Smith, Marchessault essentially for free, including many more trade for picks and players, such as the one with the jets, receiving the 13OA pick (Suzuki) in exchange not to select Perrault from them.

This is not at all what happened with the Jets.

It's definitely Chia. Those trades in OP are BRUTAL but he does have many positives trades as well. Chia has never had a significant trade win.

Kessel for two Leafs 1sts when Toronto had no #1G, no #1C, no #1D, and bad depth was a pretty good move.

Problem is Chiarelli then went and pissed away Seguin's value.
