It’s not because McDavid can’t produce on his own line, the Oilers start loading up after chasing the game from behind. The first goal often causes a change in schemes for both teams, and the Oilers have had to consistently play from behind. That’s on the goaltending and defensive mistakes of the first D Pair and the bottom two lines. It’s also the bottom two lines for their inability to score or generate any offensive looks. The plan is always to separate McDrai as long as the Oilers are winning or the score is even.

So the Oilers would rather play them separate? Sometimes I guess, but sometimes they start them together. In any event, you are saying it's a reactionary thing to put them together; that they would rather keep them apart as this is more beneficial for the team.

Game 1, they are down 4-0 late in the 2nd due to bad TEAM defense, not just bad goaltending or bad play by the defensemen. Setting aside their contribution to the bad team defense, are McDavid and Draisaitl not partially to blame strictly on the offensive side for not producing through almost two periods?

Game 2 - same story, no production by them through half of the game to possibly make the score closer where they aren't chasing the game

Game 4 - same story, no ES production from either of them leaves them chasing again


We'll see how the rest of the series plays out but so far it looks like their ability to produce on their own is lacking.

Imagine the 2nd greatest playoff scorer of all time in PPG and a playoff MVP is being blamed for this team not winning the Cup? He does his job as good as anyone else in NHL history whereas others on his team, other forwards, defenseman, and goalies absolutely do not perform at the level needed to win a Cup and no player has ever won the Cup with the amount of underperformance in other areas of their team that McDavid has had, and yet there are people want to point the finger at him.

I guarantee you are wrong. The MVP voting was due 10 minutes before the end of regulation. That's the only reason MacKinnon won it over McDavid.

Bouchard, Nurse and others lost their man, turned over the puck, and missed defensive rotations. Third goal last game was McDavid winning the faceoff, Bouchard failing to control the puck, losing it, and conceding a breakaway to Fiala of all people. Those are mistakes.

McDavid created a few chances before the third period, such as the empty net Hyman missed. The whole team apart from McDrai seem to only start playing to their full potential once they are behind for some reason. McDavid can’t do much on his line when his linemates are whiffing chances, aren’t winning board battles, can’t make basic passes etc. it’s a five v five game.

That’s the thing - Pens' energy is being wasted here. The vast majority already know McDavid is better. The last poll was an 80-20 split in favor of McDavid, and this will only go up; no one seriously thinks Crosby is better than McDavid outside of Pens fans. They should get ahead and start drafting papers for arguments against Mackinnon and Kucherov; those guys have the peak but lack longevity to be compared with Crosby for now.

Kucherov has a better peak season, more Art Rosses, and might have the same amount of Harts, two Stanley Cups, and more 30-point playoff runs. He doesn’t seem to be slowing down. He just needs the longevity.

He had a great first game against Sweden, but was average otherwise… so I guess standout for the entire tournament is a no. The play drivers were MacKinnon and McDavid. When Canada had the puck, it was clear who they wanted to drive the play; who they wanted to touch the puck as much as possible. Crosby doesn’t have any international MVPs of neither Olympics 2010, nor Olympics 2014, so we can’t fault McDavid for not winning over MacKinnon.
