seems to be super critical of those around him which isnt a trait i would like

beyond that who can really say? what do his teammates say about him?

I'm honestly really curious to see where this poll ends up.

The "right f***ing now" speech from last year's finals I thought was incredibly cringe, and I could not believe what I saw tonight with him just abandoning the center of the ice as the late forward so he could double up on the puck carrier on that second goal against tonight (????). And yet, he's offensively one of the best players to ever play the game.

Anyway I'm not sure if he's a 'poor' captain, but it seems like the best Captains (ie Messier, Scott Stevens, Sakic, Yzerman, Bergeron etc) all seem to end up winning at some point. And then there are also extremely gifted players like Jumbo or Bure who never do.

Thanks for the thread OP, curious to see where this vote ends up

Lemme guess. If he lucked into having a prime Hasek as his goalie, he’d be the bestest captain ever, right?

In 20 years no one is going to care who his goalie was, or about his point totals if he keeps coming up short.

People are going to remember him getting beat in back to back finals, him being a -5 at even strength in 2025 SCF, and as a captain who came up short. The criticism is justified at this point.

Yeah. He also sucks in the playoffs like Yzerman. Definitely done after back to back finals losses. Players generally never recover from losing in the finals. Look at Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby. Gordie Howe too, seven finals losses, did nothing else notable.

Is this a joke thread making fun of people who have stupid opinions?

Anyways, the real answer is no. The transformation of the whole Oilers team into a hard working machine over the last few years has been very striking. They play hard. That takes leadership. They just don't have the goaltending or scoring depth to keep up with Florida, especially without Hyman.

Just vote. Nobody cares about your rant.

No, but he isnt Barkov thats for sure. He produces at an all time great level and no one would pass that type of playoff production up, especially from a guy thats keyed in on as much as he is.

However I would take Barkov as a captain (not as a player in a vacuum of course). Guy does all the work to win his matchup and contribute. McDavid floats around so much defensively and wont backcheck hard into the corners etc. When you get deep into the playoffs and the whistles go away you have to be able to take over 5 on 5 like that.

That doesnt make him a bad captain though, he just took a team that frankly had no business being there 2 years in a row to two straight finals with insane stats. What he needs is a team that can win or keep a game even if he isnt out there. You cant rely on these guys at all.
