Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

the difference is that Ovi has proven before that he can take over a series. He had 11goals and 10 assists in 14 games in 09. Ovi’s first four playoffs were all over 0.5 goals per game and above a PPG all while with a weaker supporting cast. Matthews has not shown he can elevate or even maintain his game in the playoffs at all. Look at Thornton, 10 years into his career you would have said the same thing, has he been any different afterwards?

What about Barkov? Lots of examples of players that never won and weren’t superstars right at the beginning.

Between his play and his contract shenanigans that he pulls every 3-4 years (which forces his team to lose depth a lot faster since he refuses to sign for 8 years).

You can’t win with a me first player like that.

He will never be in the Kane/Chelios/Modano tier of American GOATS.

Matthews at $13.25M is not getting you a haul lmao
I guess it depends on how you define haul but it would be a solid return IMO, especially with a little retention. He would need to get a healthy year under his belt first though.

It’s all kind of a moot point, they’ve mortgaged 3 1sts and a 2nd over the next 3 drafts so they are gonna do everything they can to win now.

They shit the bed when they didn't trade Mitch last summer before the NTC kicked in.

I agree he is not getting traded

Not many teams would be able to take him on also even without the NTC

For me, retiring with the franchise that drafted you and winning a cup with them adds to a career however not doing so doesn’t impact it negatively.

There will literally be highways renamed after McDavid in Edmonton if he wins the cup, good chance there will be if he doesn’t. (Speed limit 97)

If he wins in TO, he would be recognized as the greatest Leaf ever as well…. Again, I’m an Edmonton fan saying this….

I feel McDavid is a very loyal individual…. So if he wins in Edmonton, (proves his loyalty to Edmonton) he can pay back his loyalty to TO with a cup win…. That would make him revered in 2 of the top 3 (obviously the Habs) most popular/Historic teams in Canada

McDavid has spent years in Edmonton on struggling teams and it’s only been the last two years that they’ve become a legit threat.
There’s no way he’s going to another team that struggles unless it’s a young team on the rise in a big US market.
Odds are about 99% he signs with his buddy Drai in Edmonton whether they win or lose this year anyways.
It’s a pipe dream.

Going back and winning for your hometown/childhood team is also cool too. LeBron comes to mind.

Here's a stat:

Statistically, the Leafs are better without Auston Matthews in the lineup.

Leafs Win% without Auston Matthews in his career: .633%
Leafs Win% With Auston Matthews in his career: .577%

It's not a small sample size either, it's almost a full season's worth of games he has missed.

If the Leafs are serious about winning this series, they scratch Matthews.
That's actually crazy, what a defensive stalwart.

I don't think I can recall a single time where Matthews has stepped up in a critical moment in the playoffs. He doesn't even seem to try and go out swinging.

That's just a flat out lie.

Greatest Leaf ever?

says 'Leafshater67" perhaps try watching hockey with your eyes open, and more than a game here and there. ...god forbid you actually see what a real choker looks like.

Tavares scored a career best 47 goals when Marner was on his line
What’s a real choker look like?

I’d say the 69 goal man scoring 3 in the past 20 playoff games is pretty bad. I’d also say the guy who goes from a 50-60 goal threat to a dude who scores at less than a 30 goal pace in the playoffs is pretty big of a choker to me.

He’s obviously not the only one but in the regular season, he’s clearly a top 5 centre and in the playoffs, he’s like a middle 6 guy. So tell me, if Matthews isn’t a “real choker”, who is?

How many more goals do you think McDavid adds on to to players total versus Marner?

Hyman looked horribly with Marner and great with McDavid. Couldn’t score 30 with Marner but 50 with McDavid.
I don’t think it’s as simple as “play with McDavid and add 20 goals”. It’s way more complex than that.

Leon is an elite player and a top 5 player in the league. He’d score 50 anywhere. I think they both add to eachother equally. Styles matter more and Hyman and Marner play total opposite styles.

If i played with McDavid i could score at a goal. I will be only 19 goals shy of 20!

Barkov was in round 2 by his 4th year in the playoffs, it took Matthews 7 years to accomplish that. Barkov went to the cup finals in his 5th playoff year, Matthews hasn't been past the 2nd round. Barkov won a cup in his 6th playoff year, Matthews was a year away from winning a playoff round in his 6th playoff year.
