Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

It's not easy out there against Barkov. I'm sure that's one thing Matthews is going to tell us after the series.

I cant think of a worse example of a skater whose play so consistently drops off every playoffs and I’ve been watching hockey for 30 years.

This guy is supposed to be a superstar and has a C on his jersey now and it’s the same old. 60 goal man in the regular season, 30 goal pace in the playoffs at best. He wasn’t good at 4 nations either.

It’s time to stop making excuses for this guy IMO.
Will trade you Pettersson for Matthews 😜

This team is so unlikable.

Another year, another embarrassing post season. It’s either “this is our year!” Or “this is the year heads finally roll” but it never ends up being either.

They just maintain status quo because ownership isn’t passionate nor are the rich dudes in the stands. I wish I could jump bandwagons but I just can’t care about another team as much. It’s painful to be a leafs fan.

This core is gutless. Rip the C off Matthews and run none. Nobody in this group has done enough to be captain except possibly Nylander.

Next year won't be any different because he will put the Olympics a head of his NHL team. This guy can barely stay healthy during the regular season. It's not just the offense, his defensive suffers too. He might be under 30, but his body is aging like he is closing in on 40. Crazy to think trading a 60 goal scorer and MVP is the right move, but I'm starting to think it is. Get as much as you can for him, plenty of stupid GM's out there.

Marner is worse, but Matthews is a close 2nd.
I'd personally love to see both of them gone.
Marner atleast has the ‘small perimeter player who’s not built for playoff hockey’ excuse. Matthews is 6’4 and supposed to be the best goalscoror in the NHL in his prime. Matthews is a two time 60 goal scorer, a hart winner and someone who was thought to be a serious contender to break Ovi’s goal record a year ago. His shortcomings are worse to me.

I am just choosing to believe he is injured. It may be chronic, so the affect is no different than him wilting, but I think he’s injured.

A big Friday night would make me feel better about the whole thing.

Everyone calls Matthews this incredible defensive forward. He's been "putting on a clinic" defensively according to a lot of people.

Last night he had two horrible giveaways in his own zone, one lead directly to a goal. I've noticed this a few times this series. Paying attention to his defense, there is nothing that makes him standout. Barkov is extremely noticeable defensively for example.

Is this just Leafs fans blowing smoke up their own ass to justify Matthews' lack for goal scoring? What am I missing here? The guy barely kills penalties and really isn't special as a #1 center on the defensive side.

Matthews is better at taking faceoffs, better takeaway/giveaway-ratio, better corsi and fenwick stats, better penalty killer, etc. Therefore, Matthews is easily better and Barkov gets nominated for the Selke only because of a dubious, farfetched reputation as a maestro 2way forward. Matthews hasn't received the lucky bounces that have gone to Barkov's way.

It's weird that Marner has gotten so much more shit for their playoff failures than Matthews.

Wingers have less of an impact on the game.

Marner hasn't been good enough, and has looked like he wants it too much and is basically having an anxiety attack while playing. I have some empathy for that.

Matthews just seems like a guy whose body was built to play hockey but he thinks he should be a fashion designer or something.

So when it's easy for him to dominate during the regular season without putting much skin in the game, he'll do so before hanging out with Bieber.

But when it comes time to make very real pain sacrifices? f*** that, he's gotta think about what murse goes best with his Gucci scarf.

they just use that as copium for the fact that their star center who is paid 13m to score goals sucks complete ass in the playoffs year after year and doesnt, in fact, score goals when it matters

How do you adjust goals for a single playoff campaign?

Glad that you asked.

It's using the latest JFresh model. Let's look at game 5 with Matthews. In which he was phenomenal and dominating like usual, so - he's got 6 shots (highest of all forwards) and two of them high danger shots. That equals to one goal. Now Matty has a two goal lead on Rantanen. Quite a playoff run eh?

--

But for overall dominance we have to bring Mattys defensive play to the picture. Once again, elite Selke like performance. He held the ACTUAL Selke winner Barkov to zero (!) points. That's simply amazing.

I think the big question still remains; how on earth can the Panthers handle AM34?

He had some horrible giveaways against Ottawa, too.

He’s not some elite defensive player. He’s average defensively + pretty good at faceoffs. He’s not in the realm of the Bergeron/Barkov/Kopitar tier.
