Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

3 goals in his past 21 games.

If Matthews doesn't score in this series it will be his 2nd series (last one also vs the Panthers) that he hasn't gotten a goal making it:

2 shutout series
3 1 goal series
2 2 goal series

Meaning that 7/11 playoff series he has basically played like a 3rd/4th liner.

Fun fact:
Rantanen has outscored all of Matthews playoff series (11 series/66 games) in 2 periods

Dude should've worked on his skating more and maybe his passing ngl.

Good playoff players should be able to elevate and carry anybody. Auston having average skating skills + very somewhat average physical abilities and semi-elite passing hinders him heavily

Marner is worse, but Matthews is a close 2nd.
I'd personally love to see both of them gone.

I’d let him get wrist surgery after the season and see if he bounces back.

It’s not like he just lost confidence, his shot is significantly slower than it’s ever been in his career. Unless he forgot how to shoot for the first time in his life he’s clearly injured.

He went from a 40 goal season to a 69 goal season last time.

Didn't know about the NTC or the injury.
Still, his effort level is awful, for 13 mil you need more.

Marner actually isn’t. He produces more in the playoffs. Not by much, but it’s more. And it’s less of a drop off in production from his regular season totals to his playoff totals, where Matthews has the bigger drop off and biggest drop off between him, Marner and Nylander.

He’s paid 13.25 million a year and is a career 58 points in 65 games. Only has 3 goals in his last 21 games and only 2 in these playoffs, same as Mitch, who is a playmaker that isn’t a shoot first player like Matthews, who’s bread and butter is just moldy and dried up at once the playoffs come around.

He refuses to take wrist shots, which is how he scored 69 goals. He went to Germany this season to get it looked at.

I’m assuming he needs surgery. He isn’t on his usual spot on the PP because he can’t shoot. You’ll notice he only sets up at the point or the circle for one timers, which he’s never done before and isn’t good at.

Reactions: The Eyeball Kid
It’s getting to the point of being a bit uncanny. Often these kinds of issues are overblown by people expecting too much. But we’re talking about dropping from a 52 goal pace to a 32 goal pace for his career as soon as the calendar flips. And then throw in the near-total lack of results on the team level.

He’s 28 in September so we’re past the small sample size argument, as well as the room-for-growth argument. Goodness knows his team environment isn’t the issue. It’s hard to explain how this keeps happening other than just choking.

People will give him the injury excuse, but he’s never elevated his game and taken over a series in his career. Every year there seems to be a new excuse for him.

He needs to step it up here and keep his teams season alive
