Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

I don't think he's the worst. He is not great.

The problem with him has more to do with either his heart, IE does he care about winning, or is this a job for money to fuel stuff he cares about. Players don't get paid in the playoffs.

Or he doesn't want to put his ass on the line and do the dirty work to win and lead by example.

Either way, he seems like a poor pick as a captain.
 
For a player of his pedigree? Probably. There are obviously players who went to the playoffs a bunch and did jack-squat during them, but I'd reckon it's hard to find a player with three Rockets, a Hart, a Lindsay, and a Calder who out of 11 playoff series played has been limited to 0-2 goals in 7 of them. And has a stat-line that looks like this in late series games.

Though his own teammate, Marner. might be worse. The biggest difference between them though is that Matthews has the awards while Mitch doesn't. So it's still probably Auston. Still time to rewrite the script but can't argue history.

TBH I think Marner is worse than Matthews for playoff production.

With that said, it is noticeable. I found in the Ottawa series that I was much more worried when the Nylander line was on than when the Matthews line was on. Matthews had multiple chances to bury the Sens - including in the OTs - and just hit posts or whiffed wide. 2G in 6 GP isn't nothing but it's also not great for a guy who is a threat for 60 in the regular season.

I thought the same thing. Hell, I was disappointed in Crosby's performance during that debacle of an Islanders series a couple of years ago. And that's after he's had a career worth of strong playoff showings. I could only imagine how disappointed I'd be in my team's star player if his entire playoff career was filled with underperforming.

I can understand defending the hyperbole (he's not the worst playoff performer ever) of this specific thread title, but I don't understand why some Leaf fans still defend his overall playoff performances as though there's been nothing wrong with how he's produced or that there aren't higher expectations than what he's shown so far.

As much as Marner and Nylander take plenty of grief when they slip up or don't score, Matthews always gets excused.
a) he's playing hurt
b) he's playing a more defensive game
c) oh he'll start scoring soon, you wait and see

Lack of heart, terrified of rough play in the playoffs, lazy on the back check.
Matthew Knies play is making Matthews more and more expendable. That kid is a keeper👍

more like a divergence in personal taste or aesthetic. Plenty of guys in the league spend crazy money on haircuts, clothes, cars, etc. Seems like you only bring up the guys whose style you don't care for?

If that means I don't care for the style that looks like he spends all day in the mirror and is as likely to go clothes shopping as much as or more than his mother/sister/SO, then I guess I is guilty.

Just call me an ol' fool from the ol' school.

He can't shoot the puck this year. It's that simple. Injury, mental struggles, take your pick. He's fine playing lower event 5v5, and on the face offs and defensive side, but it's not flashy. Almost like a Barkov-type performance.
