Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

Apparently his shot is 10mph slower on average than previous years. It's obvious he doesn't have the same shot not sure why. But overall he's been good.
He's been injured since the beginning of the year. That dirty hit he took in the covid year into the boards (Vs Calgary, can't remember who the player was but he got boarded and went wrist first into the boards) really messed his wrist up. He had wrist surgery on it after but it's been pretty vulnerable ever since.

Honestly it seems more likely he has a severe psychological problem causing him problems in general (he scored 60 in the year after the Covid year).

If you look at his entire career, he has had one really good performance and this was at the 2016 world juniors where he scored 7 goals in 7 games (although he got 0 goals/points in the conference final game vs Russia), apart from that he has been mostly meh to bad with a few good performances in there.

0 goals in Zurich (4 games) where the best team in the league got swept by an 8th seed, 0 goals 4NF (3 games), 1 goal 2015 WJ (5 games).

If you add up all his totals, he has 33 goals in 84 games. How a 50 goal scorer turns into a 30 goal scorer is something that is beyond physical, that's nearly a 50% performance drop. Maybe he's just not a dawg, Hockey is just a fun thing he does and is a natural athlete as opposed to some possessed maniac like McDavid/Crosby/Mackinnon who eat/breathe/sleep Hockey.

If he was playing to his potential the series could be different. Tough pill to swallow when you're paying a guy that much to be a no-show. 3 goals in his last 15 playoff games when he was a goal shy of 70 last year in the regular season is almost as bad as Hellebuyck in the first round this year.

I cant think of a worse example of a skater whose play so consistently drops off every playoffs and I’ve been watching hockey for 30 years.

This guy is supposed to be a superstar and has a C on his jersey now and it’s the same old. 60 goal man in the regular season, 30 goal pace in the playoffs at best. He wasn’t good at 4 nations either.

It’s time to stop making excuses for this guy IMO.

I don't even think he's the biggest disappearing act on his team.

Marner more obviously shies away from the physical, avoids the high traffic areas and wilts under the spotlight even more than Matthews does.

I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere down the line the Auston Matthews delivered in the post season. I would be astonished if Marner ever did. He's a coward and has no interest in paying the price to play playoff hockey.

Three goals in the last 20 playoff games agenda?
For years, all we heard during those Matthews versus Draisaitl or Matthews versus Mackinnon debates was that his goal scoring puts him above them, even though they're getting more points than him. "Best goal scorer in the league" was his entire argument for being on their level (or above).

Now that he's not scoring goals, suddenly points seem to matter more than goals.

Yeah, in the spotlight of the 4 Nations he wilted so bad. :snide:

Leafs fans say it every year

for example here's you personally talking about Matthews being injured last year about this time:
Not all of us. Some of us just get tired of defending this shit.

Even when hes not hurt. He doesnt perform at the level he needs to perform at. "Hes obviously playing hurt" Guess what? A lot of players Are Hurt. Guys play in the playoffs with bruised/broken ribs and high ankle sprains. I've never had either one but I'm sure it it hurts like a bitch

It is interesting as a non-leafs fan….. if I was a fan, I would be disappointed and would blame Matthew’s (for losses if they lose) for his historical mediocrity in the playoffs based on his potential and regular season stats. For example if the Oilers lose this series against Vegas (and everything stays the same) I would blame McDavid and Draisaitl (not only)as they have not played to their expectations. Even though McDavid has had 6 pts in 4 games and is a plus 2.

The issue with Matthew’s is that everyone sees his talent but is wanting more in the playoffs… nothing for Leafs fans to be ashamed of or mad at other fans pointing that out.

then why play him if he is sooooo banged up

Pretty sure he has been able to score goals since this hit..........just not in the playoffs.
Like other leaf fans, time to call a spade a spade.....
It's not that he hasn't been an ok playoff performer, but just ok...........and doesn't seem to elevate his game when needed.

He is the highest paid guy on the team................that has responsibility. He will be the 1st to say he has to score goals.
If he is injured, sit him.....so no excuses.

You realize he missed like 15 games to start the year and was getting treatment done in Germany ? lol
