Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

Then, run him outta town Leaf fans, and extend Tavares for another 11mil/year. I'd love for him to become the next Eichel to drink your tears out of the cup he wins with another team.

The hyperbole here is exhausting bitching about a pt/game n who probably will have shoulder reconstruction surgery or something similar in the offseason. Dude is a legit stud of a player that just about any team would love to have as their 1C.

Yea you don't trade him but you do need to make changes if they keep trying the same things and signing their best players to ridiculous numbers it will limit what else they want to do. They'll need to do something but trading your highest producing player is probably not the best idea.

Unless Matthews pulls a Rantanen with back to back hat tricks in the next 3 games, Treliving should shop his ass at the draft and see what you can get. Let Marner walk.

There's your core drastically changed over one summer.

For anyone wondering, he's currently tied for 9th in playoff points this season. 9th, with 10 points.

The only players with more points than Matthews in the Eastern conference in the playoffs right now

1) William Nylander
2) Mitch Marner

That's the list

Dumbest thread of the year

For reference, the Panthers leading scorer is Marchand with 8.

But if this is Matthews being complete trash, I can't wait til he picks it up

He has as many points as *checks notes* Cam Fowler, congratulations
*Checks notes*

Auston Matthews is 9th overall in playoffs scoring with 10

That's more than everyone in the Eastern conference except

Nylander - 15
Marner - 12
Strome/Matthews - 10

So he literally has more points than anyone on Carolina's roster, Florida's roster, and would be tied for leading scorer on the Washington Capitals.

Only players in the East who are out scoring him are his two teammates.

Jeez if Matthews is a bad playoff performer, what does it say about everyone else ?

The leafs have played more games than any other team in the east.
He's tied for 23rd in p/gp while being the 2nd highest paid player in the league.

You might have to wait until th e regular season for him to pick it up, but honestly that would be par for the course.

Haven't watched a single Toronto game yet these playoffs but stats say he's been on ice for 10 goals for and 3 goals against so far 5v5, combine that with 10 points in 10 games and even without watching a single minute of play I'd wager a guess he's been doing alright.

Their defense is a lot better than it used to be (both in terms of personnel and coverage). They can make it very difficult for opposing teams to get scoring chances from the middle of their zone and their defensemen box out well.

Matthews has been reliable defensively, but he's had a lot of help. Marner knows how to play defense as well.

People expect the most out of the best players and in the Stanley cup playoffs it's not different. I think if the leafs fall short again plenty of blame will go around and they'll have a discussion about mathews. However the problem is deeper than just mathews as we've seen in previous losses for them. I don't think you blow it up like trading him if this is what the point of this thread is. I think the overall roster is what gets people to the finish line than one or two players. Their issue could be too top heavy where they don't get enough in other places. Because in the playoffs those guys have to pick it up when the others don't score. It is a team effort. A reason why McDavid hasn't won yet. Look at the last bunch of Stanley cup winners. Players up and down the line up doing heavy lifting at different times. Mathews will need to make a mark at some point to prove some things but as far as overall team success it's deeper than just Mathews.

They traded everything for pennies on the dollar scrambling to make room for this CashOverCups Coward

That's on the gm for giving him that deal. We all knew they were crazy with their money. If they followed some other teams blueprints with their teams where top players took less to get more. I think Pittsburgh and Tampa are two that did that. They ended up with back to backs. I think Toronto could have gone that direction but they've shelled out some money for sure.

Apparently his shot is 10mph slower on average than previous years. It's obvious he doesn't have the same shot not sure why. But overall he's been good.

If Leafs crash out vs FLA it'll be a long summer because Marner is gone. They are stuck with Matthews, though. Tavares is getting is getting older. Leafs likely will be worse next season.

Matthews hasn't been healthy in the playoffs for the past few years. People are going to rip him for lack of numbers but it's not really fair to him.

We don't take kindly to injuries around here. Can't a guy stay healthy?

Dawson Mercer has never missed a game in 4 seasons.

Not the worst, not even close. But, he has been underwhelming. His stats outside of goals are ok-ish. But lacking for a player of his caphit. He's a 8-9M #1C in the playoffs, but not 13M #1 superstar.

The worrisome thing is that he hasn't really showed that he can elevate his game in playoffs.

Bergeron, Stone, Barkov, Suzuki, I haven't seen any of these guys make north of $10M.
I like Matthews's defensive game but that's not why he's paid $13M+. About time he starts lighting the lamp A LOT MORE like he's paid to do. :madfire:
