Is Leon Draisaitl Gonna Break Nathan Mackinnon's HART

I think that would be a shocker for most NHL fans though. Goalies and defensemen always have an uphill battle for the Hart, and aside from Hasek's complete domination in the late 90s, goalies only win when no forward had an especially great season. I don't think you can say that this year with MacKinnon and Draisaitl (pre-injury).
Correction, even Hasek didn't win it without all forwards having down years. Even the year he beat out Lemieux who had 122 points, Lemieux had just scored 161 points in 6 fewer games the season before. The other year he won it, the next season, Jagr led league scoring with 102, which was both bad for Jagr himself and also comparatively to earlier seasons, just a bad scoring year.

I do agree but if Mack were to win it after a 20 point drop off from last season I think it counts after the last few seasons of amazing forward production that a goalie with a historical season could win and Vegas reflects that.

Big game from Draisaitl last night. Game tying goal for his 50th and then his 51st in OT, setting the all time record for OT goals in a single season. He’s made a really good case for himself for the Hart trophy, will be interesting to see how the votes end up landing

Most 50 goal seasons, NHL history
  • 9x - Bossy, Gretzky, Ovechkin
  • 6x - Dionne, Lafleur, Lemieux
  • 5x - Bure, Esposito, Hull, Hull, Yzerman
  • 4x - Draisaitl, Kerr, Kurri, Goulet
Draisaitl is now one of only 15 players in NHL history with four (or more) 50 goal seasons.

Most 50+50 seasons, NHL history
  • 9x - Gretzky
  • 7x - Bossy
  • 6x - Dionne, Lafleur, Lemieux
  • 5x - Esposito, Yzerman
  • 4x - Draisaitl, Kurri
  • 3x - Jagr, Ovechkin
Draisaitl is now one of only 9 players in NHL history with four (or more) seasons of 50 goals and 50 assists.

When is Draisaitl returning? He already missed 2 games - are we saying he could miss ~1 more game only for 3 total? Considering Oilers have a game in hand on Colorado - that puts him and Mack at remaining games played, with a 3 point gap, and still wide open race for Hart/Ross.

If you're saying 3-4 more additional games, that could start to add up.

I also wouldn't completely discount Kucherov on Ross. He's 7 points behind MacKinnon with 1 game in hand. But both Oilers and Tampa seem to have an easier schedule left than Colorado.

Edmonton plays San Jose 3x in April. Tampa plays Buffalo 2x. Potential for lots of points.

1 week later - I maintain what I said last week, the race is far from over for the Art Ross. As of today:

Kucherov 8 games left 111 points
MacKinnon 8 games left 110 points
Draisaitl 7 games left 105 points

Kucherov is ahead - and has an easier schedule then MacK, and is on fire lately. Good chance he wins.

Draisaitl has 8 games left - but those include San Jose (3x) and Anaheim (1x). With McDavid out and his team relying on him more, he has the opportunity to really explode here. I don't think he's out of the Ross race yet.

And MacKinnon - well, of course he could still win it himself too.

I said this before but I think someone is going to have to win the AR by like 10 pts un order to compete foe the Hart with draisaitl.

He's fo a 10 goal rocket lead, is the best defensively, has the most OT goals, and is now playing without mcdavid which will help his case if Edmonton can win games without mcdavid.

If a skater takes the award it will probably be Draisaitl

At this point it's an uphill battle for Mack. The one point lead held by Kucherov is basically two points as he holds both tie-breaks for the Art Ross Trophy — has more goals and fewer games (the third tie-breaker is absolute nonsense). Two points isn't that much but Kucherov is on the attack after trailing the whole season.

Drai's form is intriguing, his timely goal scoring is really clutch this season and he's sort of dethroned McDavid in Edmonton for the time being. If he doesn't win Hart, does he get the Lindsey?

Makar is the Avs MVP.

More impressed by his play and what he is doing. Plays all situations, goes against top lines, nearly identical goal output than MacKinnon etc.
